Phil Collins opens up on Oasis, Princess Diana’s brother and his health in candid Piers Morgan interview
Phil Collins is set to open up about his career, personal life and some of the biggest stories in the headlines in a new two-hour special, Piers and Phil Collins Uncensored, airing tonight at 10pm on 5.
The candid interview sees music legend Collins sit down with Piers Morgan to discuss a wide range of subjects, from his thoughts on Oasis and the controversial book release by Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, to his own struggles with alcohol and his relationship with daughter Lily Collins.
Collins is asked about the release of Earl Spencer’s book and admits he has no plans to read it, while suggesting the controversy surrounding it will inevitably attract readers.
“I haven’t read it, and I won’t be reading it, but he knows what he’s doing, or the publishers know what they’re doing, because everybody will want to read the book,” Collins told Morgan. “That’s obvious.”
The conversation also turns to Oasis, with Morgan bringing up comments previously made by Noel Gallagher about Collins’ work.
Rather than engaging in a war of words, Collins gives a measured response, saying: “I mean, I prefer to listen to the Beatles, because they remind me of the Beatles, that’s why I say the Beatles.”
He then recalls a quip attributed to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger when asked about U2, joking: “Mick Jagger once said when someone asked him about what do you think of U2: ‘I don’t think of U2.’
“And I think that’s really what I think about Oasis.”
Away from music, the interview takes a more serious turn as Collins reflects on his health and his well-documented battle with alcohol.
The singer and drummer recalls how serious his condition became, revealing: “It was not looking good at one point. I was on a dialysis machine, things were just breaking down. The decision was whether I should be kept on a dialysis machine.”
Collins also discusses his relationship with his daughter, actress Lily Collins, including the letter she famously wrote to him about their relationship.
Reflecting on the letter, Collins says: “She wishes she hadn’t written it. Because she thought it was hurtful. I’m not saying it isn’t hurtful. I know what I did or what I shouldn’t have done. I treated her mum badly. I tried to always be there for her.
“Whenever, from the age from five or six, whenever I left the house to go off, I’ve always tried to be there for her.
The interview promises a personal side to the star, as Collins looks back on the highs and lows of a remarkable career while addressing some of the more difficult chapters of his life.
Alongside his reflections on music and family, viewers can expect Morgan to put Collins on the spot over the latest news stories and invite him to give his thoughts on some of the most talked-about figures and events in the public eye.
