The big new wide releases are Digger and Verity, with a number of smaller and independent releases also arriving. The Film Distributors’ Association lists 15 film releases for Friday 2 October.
Your guide to this weekend’s biggest new film releases and where to watch them.
Digger
In cinemas: Friday 2 October
Tom Cruise stars in this new black comedy, which is the widest new release in UK and Irish cinemas this weekend.
The film sees Cruise in a very different sort of role from his recent blockbuster work, with the movie being positioned as one of October’s major cinema releases.
Find out more about what Digger is about.
Verity
In cinemas: Friday 2 October
The big screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling thriller stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.
The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer who is hired to complete a successful author’s unfinished books after the woman is left unable to continue. She subsequently discovers material that raises disturbing questions about what really happened.
It’s one of the week’s major cinema releases, with Sony distributing the film in the UK.
Other cinema releases
There’s a particularly busy independent and international slate this week, including:
- Derek vs Derek
- Take It Or Leave It — a 4K restoration
- How Deep Is Your Love
- Extra Geography
- Kikuyu Land
- Child
- Cotton Queen
- Drishyam: The Conclusion
- Girls Like Girls
- Don’t Trouble The Trouble
- April X
- The Portuguese House
- The Weight
These are all listed for UK release on Friday 2 October, although availability will vary considerably by cinema and location.
New films streaming in the UK this weekend
The streaming picture is a little different. There aren’t loads of major Hollywood films making their subscription-streaming debut this weekend, but there are several new films worth knowing about.
Doing Life — Netflix
Available Friday 2 October
Tyler Perry’s new romantic drama arrives on Netflix UK today.
Doing Life stars Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves and follows a single mother and an incarcerated man who develop a relationship through letters.
Netflix confirms the film as one of its October 2 releases.
Schumacher ’94: The Birth of a Legend — Netflix
Available Friday 2 October
For sports and documentary fans, Netflix has also released Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend.
The documentary looks back at Michael Schumacher’s breakthrough 1994 Formula 1 season, using interviews and archival footage to revisit his first World Championship victory.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma — MUBI
Available Friday 2 October
For something much more offbeat, Jane Schoenbrun’s horror film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma arrives on MUBI.
The film stars Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson and follows a young filmmaker attempting to revive a long-running slasher franchise, only to become drawn into a strange and increasingly disturbing world surrounding its original star. MUBI describes it as a horror/comedy with a surreal edge.
The Associated Press also lists it among the notable new films arriving on streaming on October 2.
What’s not arriving this weekend
If you’re looking for the biggest recent theatrical blockbusters to watch at home, several are coming later in October rather than this weekend.
For example, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for digital rental/purchase from 6 October, rather than this weekend.
Prime Video’s next major new film, Love of Your Life, starring Margaret Qualley, isn’t due until 14 October.
📺 So, what’s worth knowing about this weekend?
| Where | Film | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 🎬 Cinema | Digger | 2 Oct |
| 🎬 Cinema | Verity | 2 Oct |
| 🎬 Cinema | Girls Like Girls | 2 Oct |
| 🎬 Cinema | Drishyam: The Conclusion | 2 Oct |
| 📺 Netflix | Doing Life | 2 Oct |
| 📺 Netflix | Schumacher ’94: The Birth of a Legend | 2 Oct |
| 📺 MUBI | Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma | 2 Oct |
The headline cinema choices are Digger and Verity, while Netflix has the most straightforward new mainstream additions this weekend. MUBI is the one to look at if you’re after something more unusual.
One thing to flag: streaming availability can differ between the UK and other territories, so I’ve specifically prioritised UK release information here.
