The Great British Bake Off preview: Audience Choice Week brings mystery boxes, famous faces and wearable bakes

bake off week three theme revealed as audience choice week

The Great British Bake Off returns to the tent (tonight), Tuesday 6 October with an episode that puts the power firmly in the hands of the viewers — and gives the bakers some of their most unusual challenges yet.

For the latest instalment of the new series, Paul Hollywood is joined on the judging bench by the legendary Nigella Lawson, while Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond are back to keep an eye on proceedings as the remaining bakers face a week in which almost anything can happen.

And this time, it isn’t just the judges who get a say.

For the first time in Bake Off history, the viewers are in charge with Audience Choice Week, meaning the challenges have been shaped around the choices of the show’s devoted audience. If the bakers thought they knew what to expect when they stepped into the famous tent, they may want to think again.

Familiar faces return for the Signature

The Signature challenge gets Audience Choice Week off to a suitably surprising start, as some familiar faces make an appearance in the tent.

With memories, expectations and plenty of pressure all baked into the challenge, the contestants must put their own spin on the brief while attempting to impress both Paul and Nigella.

Nigella’s presence is likely to add another layer of intrigue to proceedings. Known for her love of indulgent food and her relaxed but discerning approach to cooking, she joins Paul to scrutinise the bakers’ creations — and there will be nowhere to hide if their flavours, textures or presentation don’t quite hit the mark.

As always in the Signature, confidence will be key. The bakers have the freedom to show off their personalities, but that freedom can be a double-edged sword. With the audience having helped shape the challenge, choosing exactly how far to push a bake could prove crucial.

The gingham cloth gets the boot

If the Signature wasn’t enough to unsettle the bakers, the Technical is set to turn the traditional Bake Off format on its head.

The familiar gingham cloth is replaced by a mystery box, leaving the contestants with an altogether different kind of challenge.

Rather than being handed a conventional Technical recipe and expected to follow the judges’ instructions, the bakers are presented with a wealth of possibilities. The problem? Having too much choice can sometimes be harder than having none at all.

The mystery box forces the contestants to make decisions for themselves, testing not only their baking skills but also their instincts. With no easy route to follow, they will have to work out what to make, how to make it and how to make it stand out.

And in the world of Bake Off, more choice doesn’t necessarily mean an easier ride.

The Technical has always had a habit of exposing even the smallest weakness, and this unusual format could make it particularly difficult to predict who will flourish and who will find themselves scrambling to recover.

Fashion meets baking in the Showstopper

For the Showstopper, Bake Off heads into territory rarely seen in the famous tent as the contestants unleash their inner fashionistas.

Milan, Paris and London might be renowned for their fashion credentials, but this week the bakers are hoping to give the world’s style capitals a run for their money with wearable bakes.

That’s right: this is a Showstopper that isn’t simply designed to be admired from a cake stand.

The contestants must create edible creations inspired by fashion, transforming their baking into spectacular pieces that can actually be worn. It’s a challenge that demands imagination, technical skill and a very careful approach to construction.

After all, creating an impressive cake is one thing. Creating one that can survive being worn is quite another.

The bakers will need to think beyond flavour and decoration, considering shape, structure and practicality as they attempt to turn their ideas into edible fashion statements. With the pressure of the final challenge mounting, there could be some spectacular creations — and some equally spectacular collapses.

The result promises to be one of the most visually striking Showstoppers of the series so far.

Who will impress Paul and Nigella?

With the audience setting the agenda, there is an extra element of unpredictability running through this week’s episode.

Every challenge presents a different test: the Signature asks the bakers to respond to an unusual brief while showcasing their own style; the mystery-box Technical puts their decision-making skills to the test; and the wearable-bake Showstopper demands creativity on a completely different scale.

Nigella will have the opportunity to see the bakers tackle some of their most imaginative creations yet, while Paul will be looking closely at whether their ambition is matched by execution.

For the contestants, meanwhile, the stakes are higher than ever. In a week where the public has helped decide what they will face, there is no guarantee that even the most experienced baker will feel completely at home.

And with the dreaded elimination waiting at the end of the episode, one question remains: who can survive Audience Choice Week?

Will the bakers rise to the challenge, or will too much choice prove their downfall? And when fashion and baking collide, whose edible creation will be a triumph — and whose will end up as a very elaborate fashion faux pas?

One thing is certain: with mystery boxes replacing the gingham cloth, familiar faces invading the tent and cakes heading firmly into the world of couture, this is Bake Off as you’ve never seen it before.
