Singer-songwriter Raye has been awarded the prestigious Mercury Prize 2026 for her self-written and co-produced album, This Music May Contain Hope, calling the achievement the “best birthday present” she could have received.
The 28-year-old artist secured the victory following a ceremony at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Thursday night (22.10.26). Speaking backstage after her win, Raye reflected on the dedication required to bring the ambitious project to life.
“I just poured so much heart into this album, I really did,” she said. “Down to the wire, I set myself the goal to just make the most ambitious album. We have about four orchestras’ worth of musicians on this. So much passion and love for music went into this album and really this accolade is really serious and something I always dreamed to one day receive. I just feel really grateful. It’s just the best birthday present I could have asked for.”
A Historic Shortlist
Raye emerged victorious from a stacked 12-album shortlist that included Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney for his solo record The Boys of Dungeon Lane, marking his first-ever appearance on a Mercury Prize shortlist.
The full list of 2026 nominees included:

Dove Ellis – Blizzard
JADE – THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY!

An Indefinite Pause on New Music
Despite the massive critical success of her latest record, fans awaiting a follow-up may be in for a long wait. The singer—who has recently been linked to actor Michael B. Jordan—revealed earlier this year that she is putting future album production on hold until her personal life changes direction.
During an August appearance on the Today show, Raye explained her stance: “I’m on strike, basically. I’m on strike from making an album until I fall in love basically. Because, do you know what it is? I’ve written so many songs … Picture this: I’ve been a songwriter for a really long time and your perspective … my perspective has largely just been, ‘This didn’t work out or this sucks or I’m alone. My ex that time, or my ex that time.’ So I’m just very bored of that perspective.”
When asked if she was genuinely prepared to delay her next release until finding “Mr Right”, she confirmed: “Absolutely. I’m hard-set. It could be 10 years, guys.”
For now, Raye is content taking her time and waiting for a fresh perspective before returning to the studio, noting: “I’m just really excited to find another project, see what happens in life and just enjoy the twists and turns, do all that stuff.”
