A new medical drama is arriving on Channel 4 tonight, with The F Ward promising fast-paced hospital emergencies, complicated relationships and plenty of pressure as a group of struggling interns fight for their last chance to become doctors.
The Australian drama begins on Saturday, October 31, at 9pm on Channel 4, with the entire series also becoming available to stream in full to coincide with the television premiere.
Starring Anna Friel, Ioane Sa’ula, Dan Wyllie, Lola Bond and Alan Fitzalan, the series is set at a beachside hospital where a group of inexperienced interns must prove they have what it takes to survive in the medical profession.
But these are not ordinary first-day trainees. Each has already endured a disastrous previous stint as an intern, leaving them with one final opportunity to turn things around.
And with a demanding team leader, an unconventional registrar and a hospital full of patients who need their help, it is not going to be an easy ride.
What is The F Ward about?
The F Ward follows a group of interns who arrive at the beachside hospital The Pines for what could be their final opportunity to qualify as doctors.
They are immediately thrown into the deep end, with team leader Gloria making it clear that she has little patience for excuses.
Her message to the new arrivals is simple: this is a hospital, not a safe space.
They must also learn to work alongside maverick registrar Curtis, who has his own unconventional approach to treating patients and getting the job done.
The interns quickly discover that their biggest challenges are not necessarily confined to the hospital wards. They must learn to trust one another, deal with their own mistakes and prove they can handle the responsibility that comes with saving lives.
The series combines the urgency of a medical drama with the personal struggles of a group of young professionals who have everything to prove.
The F Ward episode 1 preview – Friday, October 31
The opening episode sees a desperate group of interns descend on The Pines for their first day.
However, Jimmy and Ellie manage to get off on completely the wrong foot when they both arrive late for their first meeting.
Gloria is unimpressed and promptly sends them back outside to wait, making it clear from the outset that she will not tolerate unprofessional behaviour.
But there is little time for introductions or settling in when disaster strikes.
A wild storm hits the area, flooding the hospital with casualties and cutting off the electricity supply.
The inexperienced interns are suddenly faced with a major emergency, with patients arriving in need of urgent treatment while the hospital itself struggles to cope.
With Gloria and Curtis overseeing their work, the group must pull together and try to get both the patients and the hospital back to good health.
But after their previous failures, can they really cope when the pressure is at its highest?
The F Ward episode 2 preview – Friday, October 31
There is no long wait for the next instalment, with episode two airing straight after the opener at 10pm on Channel 4.
Following the stressful events of their first day, Gloria gathers the interns for a debrief in the aftermath of a tragedy.
The experience has already tested the group, but there are further challenges waiting for them.
Ellie and Curtis find themselves forced to bend the rules when a young couple’s attempt to conceive turns into a matter of life and death.
Meanwhile, Jimmy has barely had time to recover from his own traumatic experience when paramedics bring in a young boy suffering from severe internal bleeding.
The interns must once again put their training to the test as they deal with another urgent situation.
And as the reality of working at The Pines begins to sink in, they are all reminded of the consequences of making mistakes when they have already been given their last chance.
