Exclusive: The BBC is reportedly keen to bring the presenter back to the corporation, with the Love Island star tipped for a potential Strictly Come Dancing role as bosses look to attract a younger audience.
Could Maya Jama be about to swap the Love Island villa for the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom?
The hugely popular presenter is reportedly being considered for a return to the BBC, following her appearance on the broadcaster’s hit reality series The Celebrity Traitors.
Maya, 32, has become one of British television’s biggest personalities, best known for fronting ITV’s Love Island and appearing as a panellist on The Masked Singer. However, her latest television appearances have seemingly reminded BBC bosses of the star power they once had on their own screens.
And with Strictly Come Dancing facing mounting questions about its future, Maya could be just the kind of high-profile signing the corporation needs.
According to insiders, BBC executives are keen to explore opportunities to bring the presenter back, with the flagship Saturday-night dancing competition among the potential projects being discussed.
One source said: “Maya is ratings gold. All generations love her, but she’s particularly admired by younger audiences, which is what the BBC need more than ever right now.
“The Strictly presenting line-up this year was meant to refresh the brand, but there are concerns that the changes haven’t delivered the boost bosses were hoping for. Now, insiders are suggesting Maya could be the answer.”
“If the BBC want to save face, they may well keep Emma on and introduce Maya as the main face of what used to be known as the Claudatorium”.
The presenter certainly has the experience to make the transition.
Long before becoming the face of Love Island, Maya established herself at the BBC, where she made history as the youngest-ever presenter on BBC Radio 1 when she joined the station aged just 22.
She also fronted BBC Three’s make-up competition Glow Up, demonstrating her ability to connect with audiences across different entertainment formats.
Her potential return would represent something of a full-circle moment for the star, who has since transformed herself into one of the most recognisable faces in British entertainment.
And it is her appearance on The Celebrity Traitors that may have strengthened the BBC’s interest.
On the celebrity spin-off, Maya showcased a different side to her personality, proving she can handle suspense, high-stakes drama and the unpredictable nature of live reality television.
Her confidence, quick wit and natural warmth have long made her a favourite with viewers, but The Celebrity Traitors gave audiences another opportunity to see her away from the familiar Love Island format.
And those qualities could translate perfectly to Strictly, which relies on its presenters to balance humour, emotion, glamour and the occasional awkward live television moment.
The BBC is also understood to be exploring a number of fresh entertainment formats for Maya as it looks to tempt her away from ITV over the next 12 months.
While Strictly would undoubtedly be the biggest prize, there is growing interest in securing established names who can bring younger viewers to BBC entertainment.
The challenge for the corporation is particularly significant given the changing television landscape. Traditional Saturday-night entertainment shows are competing not only with rival broadcasters but also with streaming platforms and social media for viewers’ attention.
Strictly has remained one of Britain’s best-known entertainment brands, but its ability to attract new generations of viewers is becoming increasingly important.
Maya could offer a particularly attractive solution. She has an enormous social media following, considerable appeal among younger audiences and the sort of mainstream recognition that could help generate excitement around a new television series.
Of course, taking on Strictly would be a major commitment, particularly given her existing ITV connections and the success she continues to enjoy with Love Island.
There has been no official confirmation that Maya is being lined up to replace anyone on Strictly, and the BBC has yet to announce any changes to its presenting arrangements.
But one thing is difficult to dispute: her star quality is no longer in question.
Whether she ends up taking to the Strictly ballroom or fronting an entirely new BBC entertainment format, Maya Jama is clearly a name television executives will be keen to keep on their radar.
And if the BBC really is looking for a presenter capable of giving Strictly a fresh lease of life, could Maya be the woman to do it?
In our opinion, she’s the perfect fit.
