ITV’s gripping crime drama Winter continues tonight with its fifth episode, as Richard Armitage returns as brilliant forensic pathologist Dr Ethan Winter to investigate another disturbing case.
The hit series airs at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with the penultimate episode promising more shocking revelations, twisted secrets and personal drama for the central characters.
Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Bristol, Winter follows the work of Dr Ethan Winter, a highly intelligent and meticulous forensic pathologist who has an extraordinary ability to uncover the truth behind mysterious deaths.
Working alongside DI Lauren Bell and DS Ellis Daldry, Winter helps the team crack a series of compelling murder cases, using his unflinching eye for detail and extensive knowledge of the human body to discover what really happened.
While others might overlook the smallest details, Winter sees clues that could hold the key to solving even the most complicated investigations. His unusual ability to communicate with the dead, interpreting their bodies as a map of their final moments, makes him a particularly fascinating character.
But as the series progresses, it is not just the victims’ secrets that are coming to light.
What happens in Winter tonight?
In tonight’s penultimate episode, an ordinary cinema date takes a horrifying turn when a woman suddenly staggers into the foyer covered in blood.
The shocking incident sets the stage for another disturbing investigation, as Winter races against time to save a stabbing victim.
As he begins to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack, the investigation leads him towards a complicated web of family secrets, with the truth proving far more disturbing than initially expected.
Meanwhile, DI Lauren Bell finds herself confronting a devastating truth about her marriage.
As the professional and personal pressures mount, Bell must deal with revelations that could have far-reaching consequences for her future.
With just one episode remaining after tonight, viewers can expect the drama to build towards an explosive series finale.
Richard Armitage on playing Dr Ethan Winter
Richard Armitage, best known for his roles in a number of acclaimed television dramas and films, takes centre stage as the intriguing Dr Ethan Winter.
Read an interview with Richard about WINTER, here.
The actor has spoken about what attracted him to the character and revealed that the world of forensic pathology was something he had long been fascinated by.
Speaking about what attracted him to the role, Richard Armitage (Dr Ethan Winter) said:
“I’ve never played anyone from the world of forensics before. My friend is a defence lawyer and works in that field. She’s secretive about her job and I’ve always probed her to tell me more as I’m fascinated. So that aspect interested me, as well as the fact that Winter communes with the murder victims. The way that he talks to the dead and uses their bodies as a map to find out how they died is so interesting. There were so many things about this character that I loved. I was tempted to watch the French drama which inspired Winter, but I didn’t want to be influenced by someone else, so I left it alone”.
It is Winter’s unusual approach to his work that sets the character apart from many traditional television detectives. Rather than simply examining the evidence left at a crime scene, he effectively allows the victims themselves to tell their stories through the forensic clues their bodies reveal.
This distinctive element has helped give the series its own identity within the crowded crime drama genre.
Winter proves popular with ITV viewers
Although Winter has received mixed responses from television critics, audiences appear to have taken the drama to their hearts.
More than two million viewers have been tuning in to each episode, demonstrating a strong appetite for Richard Armitage’s latest television role.
The combination of atmospheric Bristol locations, intriguing murder investigations and the complicated personal lives of its central characters has helped keep viewers coming back.
With tonight’s episode marking the penultimate instalment, there is now plenty of anticipation about how the various storylines will develop and what lies ahead for Winter, Bell and Daldry.
For anyone who has yet to discover the series, the good news is that the whole series is available to stream on ITVX.
Winter continues tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
