BBC One’s latest Saturday night entertainment format, Wisdom of the Crowd, puts individual players head-to-head against a studio audience of 200 people. Hosted by comedian John Bishop, the game show tests a famous 100-year-old scientific theory: can a single mind outsmart the collective average of a crowd?

How Wisdom of the Crowd works

In each episode, individual contestants compete to win up to £30,000. Rather than testing standard trivia, the show focuses on numerical estimation and real-world statistics—asking questions like the average cost of an engagement ring or how many pairs of pants the average man owns.

  • The Core Mechanism: The entire 200-person studio audience enters their numeric guesses simultaneously via interactive keypads. The system calculates the average guess of the entire group—representing the “Wisdom of the Crowd”.
  • 3 Chances to Win: Each contestant gets three attempts to beat the crowd. To win a £10,000 round, the individual contestant’s estimate must be closer to the actual answer than the average guess of the audience.
  • The Crowd Fund: If the crowd’s average guess is closer, the contestant loses that round, and the £10,000 goes into the Crowd Fund.
  • The Tactical Dilemma: If a contestant fails to beat the crowd on their third attempt, they are knocked out with nothing. However, before getting eliminated, a contestant can choose to forfeit their chance at the main prize and take a seat in the crowd, earning an equal share of whatever money remains in the Crowd Fund at the end of the show.

The Science Behind the Show

The series draws direct inspiration from a 1906 observation by scientist Francis Galton. While visiting a livestock fair, Galton analyzed 800 guesses on the weight of an ox. He discovered that while individual estimates varied wildly, the average of all guesses combined was remarkably accurate—beating almost every individual expert.

Speaking about taking on the hosting duties, John Bishop said:

“I’m delighted to be back on the BBC on Saturday nights to host Wisdom of the Crowd. This big new entertainment format gives an interesting take on group dynamics – not only testing what the individual contestants know, but also testing what the crowd knows (or what they think they know!) I can’t wait for audiences to see it.”

Wisdom of the Crowd premieres on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Saturday, September 19, at 9:15 PM.
