Grammy-winning musician Jacob Collier is officially making CBeebies Bedtime Stories history as the first guest reader to compose a custom, original piece of music specifically to accompany his story.

The multi-instrumentalist and songwriter will read The Big-Time Boogie-Woogie Animal Band—written by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Nick East—on Friday, September 18 at 6:50 PM on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer. Collier’s specially composed soundtrack will bring the vibrant narrative to life, following a colorful cast of musical creatures ranging from a piano-playing polar bear to a saxophone-performing koala.
Reflecting on the milestone opportunity, Jacob Collier said:
“Bedtime stories were a deep and foundational part of my childhood. They forged so much of the fabric of my inner world, and my relationship with the outer. When CBeebies asked if I might be open to read a story, I was so excited – and I knew I wanted to build a musical world around it. I made sure that every animal and their instrument was represented within the cacophony of sounds – getting them all to work together was something of a challenge. I hope it sparks joy – it sure did for me!!”
Famous for his intricate arrangements and boundary-pushing soundscapes, Collier joins an elite roster of music icons who have previously hosted the beloved BBC children’s segment. Past star readers include Dolly Parton, Gregory Porter, Billie Eilish, Elton John, Jessie J, Harry Styles, Kylie Minogue, Mark Ronson, and Robbie Williams.
