Virgin Radio UK is launching a direct challenge against BBC Radio 1’s legendary Friday night dance lineup. The station has signed iconic DJ and producer Paul Oakenfold for a brand-new 12-week residency, putting him in direct competition with another giant of dance music, Pete Tong.

Oakenfold will host a three-hour weekly show running from 9:00 PM until midnight, launching on Friday, September 18. The high-profile evening slot puts Virgin Radio in direct battle with Radio 1’s long-standing electronic schedule.
The residency promises a deep dive into electronic music history and current hits, covering everything from the early days of Balearic music to classic house and trance. Listeners will also get first-hand access to new releases from Oakenfold’s upcoming album, Mission Underground, as well as tracks directly from his personal studio and his famous Perfecto record label. Alongside the track selection, Oakenfold will share personal stories and rare records spanning his decades in the industry.
As one of the key figures who helped bring the Ibiza sound home to the UK, Oakenfold boasts an unmatched resume. He made history as the first DJ to ever headline Glastonbury and has supported legendary acts on tour, including U2 and Madonna. His career features landmark residencies at Cream in Liverpool, Ministry of Sound in London, and premier venues across Ibiza, alongside show-stopping performances at Mount Everest Basecamp, the Great Wall of China, and Stonehenge. His high-profile remix roster includes artists like The Cure, U2, Massive Attack, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Mansun, and Radiohead.
Speaking on joining the lineup, Paul said:
“The Friday night 9pm to midnight slot is important and lets me become part of the listeners’ weekend experience. I have saved a few exclusive tracks for the show so tune in and check it out.”
Setting up the main event, Goldierocks will lead into Oakenfold’s show each week from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a high-energy mix of club classics.
