EastEnders fans stunned by shocking Nancy Carter pregnancy twist as Linda Carter prepares to leave

EastEnders has left viewers stunned with a shocking new Carter family storyline after Nancy Carter returned to Walford pregnant — with her brother Lee seemingly claiming to be the father of her baby.

The dramatic twist was revealed in Monday’s episode, which was made available early on BBC iPlayer before its evening broadcast on BBC One.

Fans who watched the episode online were quick to take to social media to question exactly what is going on with the returning Carter siblings.

The storyline has immediately raised one huge question: is EastEnders really heading towards an incest storyline, or is there another explanation for Lee Carter’s extraordinary claim?

EastEnders Nancy Carter pregnancy storyline explained

Nancy Carter, played by Maddy Hill, made her long-awaited return to Albert Square after leaving the BBC soap in 2022.

She arrived with a problem she wanted her brother Johnny Carter to help her with, asking him for legal guidance over an unexpected situation.

But Nancy’s return quickly became complicated when Max Branning spotted her getting into a taxi.

Max, played by Jake Wood, told Nancy’s mother Linda that he had seen her daughter, prompting Linda to become concerned about her wellbeing.

Linda followed Nancy to hospital, where she was left stunned to discover that her daughter was heavily pregnant.

Nancy insisted that the situation was not what her mother thought.

“Mum, look, it’s complicated,” Nancy told Linda.

She then asked her mother and Elaine Peacock to leave, leaving the nature of her pregnancy shrouded in mystery.

But the biggest shock was still to come.

Nancy subsequently arrived at the B&B with her brother Lee Carter, played by returning actor Danny Hatchard.

When Linda wanted to know about the baby’s father, Nancy told her that she needed to know the truth.

Lee then delivered the bombshell.

“It’s me,” he revealed. “The baby is mine.”

The episode immediately left viewers asking whether EastEnders has really embarked on its most controversial Carter storyline yet.

However, there may be considerably more to the story than the shocking revelation suggests.

The BBC has not yet confirmed the exact circumstances behind Lee’s claim, meaning viewers will have to wait to discover whether he is actually the biological father or whether he is acting as a surrogate or has another connection to the pregnancy.

That uncertainty is likely to fuel speculation as the storyline develops.

Who plays Nancy Carter?

Nancy Carter is played by Maddy Hill, who originally joined EastEnders in 2013 as part of the Carter family.

Nancy is the daughter of Mick and Linda Carter and the sister of Lee, Johnny, Ollie and Annie.

During her original stint in Walford, Nancy became involved in a number of major storylines, including her diagnosis with epilepsy and her relationships with characters including Tamwar Masood and Zack Hudson.

Hill left the soap in 2022 but has now returned for a limited stint as part of the major Carter storyline.

Her return was announced alongside that of Danny Hatchard, who is reprising his role as Lee.

Hill previously said she was excited to step back into Nancy’s shoes and reunite with familiar faces.

Danny Hatchard returns as Lee Carter

Danny Hatchard is back as Lee Carter for what promises to be one of his most dramatic EastEnders returns.

Lee was originally introduced as the eldest son of Mick and Linda and served in the British Army before returning to Walford.

His storylines included his relationship with Whitney Dean, as well as struggles with depression, debt and PTSD.

Hatchard originally left the soap as a regular in 2017 but has made return appearances since.

Speaking about his latest comeback, Hatchard teased that it would be his “most explosive return yet”, with plenty for him to get his teeth into.

The actor has also made clear that his return is closely connected to the upcoming departure of Kellie Bright’s Linda Carter.

Kellie Bright is leaving EastEnders as Linda Carter

The storyline comes at a particularly significant time for the Carter family because Kellie Bright is leaving EastEnders after 13 years as Linda Carter.

Bright announced her departure in August 2026, saying that she had decided it was the right time to say goodbye to the BBC soap.

The actress has played Linda since December 2013, when the Carter family arrived in Walford and took over the Queen Vic.

Linda has subsequently become one of EastEnders’ most recognisable modern characters.

Her storylines have included her rape by Dean Wicks, struggles with alcoholism, her relationship with Mick Carter and the dramatic Christmas 2023 storyline in which she killed Keanu Taylor while protecting Sharon Watts.

Bright actually made the decision to leave more than a year before the announcement, but agreed to stay longer after producers discussed an important storyline they had planned for Linda.

She is therefore not leaving immediately.

Instead, the Carter family’s current storyline is expected to form a major part of the build-up to Linda’s eventual exit.

EastEnders executive producer Ben Wadey has promised that Bright’s departure will be packed with drama, saying there is still a long way to go before viewers say goodbye to Linda.

Why are Nancy and Lee returning?

The return of Nancy and Lee was announced as part of the show’s plans for Linda’s exit storyline.

The two siblings have returned to Walford at a crucial moment for their mother, with both Maddy Hill and Danny Hatchard reprising their roles.

The BBC previously teased that viewers’ “jaws will drop” when the first major cliffhanger involving the Carter siblings arrives.

That promise has certainly been fulfilled with the latest pregnancy revelation.

The storyline also gives EastEnders the opportunity to bring several members of the Carter family back together before Linda’s departure.

Latest EastEnders ratings

EastEnders continues to face the same challenge affecting much of traditional television: audiences are increasingly watching programmes through streaming and catch-up services rather than at the time they are broadcast.

Recent BARB data has shown EastEnders regularly attracting around 3 million viewers in consolidated seven-day figures, with the soap still one of the BBC’s major continuing dramas.

For example, a weekly BARB compilation for May 2026 put EastEnders at 3.224 million viewers for the week of May 25–31.

Earlier in 2026, weekly averages were around the same level, although individual episodes can vary significantly depending on the storyline and competing television events.

An episode broadcast during the FIFA World Cup in June, for example, was reported at just 1.6 million overnight viewers, illustrating how dramatically live television events can affect the soap’s traditional broadcast audience.

The figures also need to be viewed in the context of the huge change in how EastEnders is consumed.

EastEnders BBC iPlayer viewing figures

The BBC has increasingly moved episodes of EastEnders to BBC iPlayer from 6am on the day they are broadcast, giving viewers the opportunity to watch the latest episode many hours before it appears on BBC One.

That makes a simple overnight television figure an increasingly incomplete measure of the show’s total audience.

Ofcom’s 2025 Media Nations report highlighted the importance of iPlayer to EastEnders, particularly among younger viewers.

It found that 74% of EastEnders’ 16–34 audience was watching via BBC iPlayer in 2025, demonstrating how significantly the soap’s audience has shifted away from traditional linear television.

The same Ofcom report noted that a major 2025 EastEnders episode had an audience of just under 4 million on the day on TV sets, but that increased to 5.4 million once viewing on connected devices and after the original broadcast was included.

That episode became the soap’s most-watched episode of 2025 at that point.

Consequently, the number of people watching an EastEnders episode cannot be judged solely by the audience watching BBC One at 7.30pm.

When is EastEnders on?

EastEnders currently airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.

Episodes are also released on BBC iPlayer at 6am, allowing viewers to watch them ahead of their BBC One broadcast.

The current schedule confirms the 6am iPlayer release and 7.30pm BBC One transmission for the soap’s episodes this week.

That early iPlayer release is particularly important for major storylines because spoilers can spread across social media long before the episode reaches its traditional evening television audience.

EastEnders fans react to Carter family bombshell

The Nancy and Lee twist has already generated considerable interest among fans, with viewers questioning exactly what Lee’s revelation means.

The use of the Carter family — one of EastEnders’ best-known modern families — gives the storyline an additional emotional impact, particularly because Linda’s departure is now looming.

The BBC has yet to reveal the full explanation behind the pregnancy.

For now, viewers are left with one extraordinary question:

Is Lee really Nancy’s baby’s father — or is there another explanation for his claim?

With Linda Carter’s exit also approaching, the answer could have major consequences for the future of the entire Carter family.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One, with episodes available from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
