Tenzing is in select cinemas from today (9 October), but when can you stream it?
The wait to experience the heroic ascent of Mount Everest through a fresh lens is finally over. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, Tenzing makes its debut in selected cinemas today, October 9, 2026.
If you prefer to stream the biographical drama from the comfort of your own home, you won’t have to wait long: Tenzing will be available to stream globally on Apple TV just one week later, on Friday, October 16, 2026.
A Legendary Story, Retold
Based on extraordinary true events, Tenzing chronicles the little-known personal journey of Tenzing Norgay (played by Genden Phuntsok), the gifted Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston), became the first person verified to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
While history books often centered the Western achievement, Peedom’s film reframes the narrative. Encouraged by his wife Dawa (Thinley Lhamo) and supported by expedition secretary Jill Henderson (Caitríona Balfe), Tenzing advocates for his right to join the British climbing team as an equal member rather than simply serving it. He faces an initial hurdle in Colonel John Hunt (Willem Dafoe), whom Tenzing and Henderson must persuade to see beyond the rigid social structures of the era.
Empire, Respect, and the Sacred Mountain
The film contrasts two fundamentally different perspectives on the legendary peak. Where Western climbers view “Everest” as a physical challenge to be conquered, Tenzing holds a deep spiritual reverence for “Chomolungma,” viewing it as the sacred mother goddess.
As the ascent begins, the narrative explores the clash of background, social class, and competing personal ambitions against the lethal perils of the mountain itself. High above the world, those divides strip away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual trust, respect, and a shared spiritual calling.
