HBO has officially greenlit a new Crazy Rich Asians drama series, bringing the beloved story back to screens with original film stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng returning, alongside Michelle Yeoh in a recurring role.
Based on Kevin Kwan’s global bestselling books, the one-hour drama will continue the story after the events of the blockbuster 2018 film, which became the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She will be joined by Kwan, the film’s director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
The announcement marks the return of a creative team and cast whose film adaptation became a major cultural hit, with the upcoming series set to explore the characters and their world across eight episodes.
Crazy Rich Asians cast reunites for HBO series
Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will star as series regulars, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will appear in a recurring role. The actors are returning to the characters they brought to life in the original film.
The news has been welcomed by the team behind the project, with executives and producers expressing their excitement about continuing the story for both existing fans and a new television audience.
Casey Bloys, Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer, Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, said: “We are so excited that Adele and the team behind the history-making film are bringing the next chapter of this story to life. Constance, Henry, Ronny, and Michelle are global superstars, and we know the passionate fans of the film and megahit novels can’t wait to see more. We’re glad to be in partnership with this talented producing team and cast.”
Channing Dungey, Chairman, Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, also shared her enthusiasm for the adaptation, saying: “From a bestselling novel to a blockbuster film and now television, CRAZY RICH ASIANS has solidified its place as one of the most beloved stories in popular culture. Kevin Kwan created an irresistible world filled with the perfect blend of glitz, humor, and heart, and the talented Adele Lim returns to adapt this renowned tale for a new television audience. We are equally thrilled to welcome Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh back to reprise their iconic roles. We can’t wait to bring this series to life with our partners at HBO.”
Adele Lim promises a sequel with more room to explore the characters
Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will lead the series as showrunner and executive producer. With eight episodes planned, the television format will give the creative team more time to explore the characters and settings introduced in Kwan’s books.
Speaking about the project, Lim said: “It’s a CRAZY RICH family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books. Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
Kwan also expressed his excitement at seeing his characters return, with the author highlighting the enthusiasm of fans who have been waiting for the story to continue.
He said: “I am thrilled that the CRAZY RICH ASIANS family is getting back together thanks to HBO and Warner Bros. Television. Our incredible fans around the world have been patiently waiting for this, and it will be worth the wait! Getting to see my stories and characters come to life with the breathing room of an HBO series is a dream come true, and I am so excited to experience the magic that Adele, Jon, Nina, Brad, our amazing writers and iconic cast will create.”
Jon M. Chu reacts to the Crazy Rich Asians reunion
Director Jon M. Chu, who helmed the original film, is also returning as an executive producer. Looking back on the impact the movie had on his life and career, Chu celebrated the chance to reunite with the cast and creative team.
He said: “Eight years ago, CRAZY RICH ASIANS changed my life, and I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I’ve ever known. Since then, this cast has become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers and even an Oscar winner, so bringing everyone back together feels like coming home. It’s been incredible watching audiences make this movie part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie, and I can’t wait to share what comes next. Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: ‘When are we getting the sequel?’ Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back.”
Producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are equally delighted to be bringing the franchise back. They said: “We couldn’t be happier to bring this extraordinary gang back together for a series that picks up where the movie left off. As producers, the most common question we get is ‘When do we get more CRAZY RICH ASIANS?’ and we are so glad to finally have the answer.”
What to expect from the Crazy Rich Asians series
The new HBO drama will continue the story beyond the original film, returning viewers to the glamorous world created by Kwan and expanding on the characters and relationships that made the franchise so popular.
The involvement of Lim, Kwan, Chu, Jacobson and Simpson brings together key members of the original creative team, while the returning cast offers continuity for fans of the film.
With eight episodes planned, the series will have more time than a feature film to explore the books’ characters and settings. Further details about the plot, additional casting and premiere date have yet to be announced.
For now, the return of Crazy Rich Asians is set to deliver a long-awaited continuation of the story, with HBO bringing the original team back together for its next chapter.
