Hogwarts is welcoming some more familiar faces, with five new cast members announced for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series.
Leo Bill, Andrew Brooke, Laura Smyth, Daniel Fearn and David Threlfall have joined the cast of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with the latest announcement revealing who will bring some of the wizarding world’s most memorable Hogwarts characters to life.
The new additions include five characters who will be familiar to fans of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books and the original film adaptations.

Leo Bill will play Nearly Headless Nick, the ghost of Gryffindor Tower, while Andrew Brooke has been cast as the Bloody Baron, the ghost associated with Slytherin House.
Laura Smyth will take on the role of the Fat Lady, the portrait guarding the entrance to Gryffindor Tower, and Daniel Fearn will portray the Fat Friar, the friendly ghost of Hufflepuff House.
Meanwhile, David Threlfall will provide the voice of the Sorting Hat, the enchanted hat responsible for deciding which Hogwarts house each new student belongs to.
The announcement adds another layer of familiar Hogwarts characters to the growing cast, as HBO continues to build its television adaptation of the seven Harry Potter books.
Who are the new Harry Potter cast members?
The five newly announced actors will portray some of the most recognisable supernatural characters from the first Harry Potter book, bringing more of Hogwarts’ magical history to the small screen.
Here’s a closer look at the latest additions:
- Leo Bill as Nearly Headless Nick: Also known as Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, Nearly Headless Nick is the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower. Famous for his almost-decapitation, he is one of the friendlier ghosts at Hogwarts and becomes a familiar presence to Harry and his friends.
- Andrew Brooke as the Bloody Baron: The ghost of Slytherin House is one of Hogwarts’ more intimidating spirits. Covered in silver bloodstains, he has a particularly fearsome reputation among the students.
- Laura Smyth as the Fat Lady: The Fat Lady lives inside a portrait guarding the entrance to Gryffindor Tower. Students must give her the correct password before she will allow them into their common room.
- Daniel Fearn as the Fat Friar: Representing Hufflepuff House, the Fat Friar is one of the castle’s more cheerful and welcoming ghosts.
- David Threlfall as the voice of the Sorting Hat: Perhaps one of the most important magical objects at Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat determines which of the four school houses each first-year student will join.
The Sorting Hat plays a particularly important role in Harry’s first year, as he must decide where he belongs among Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.
The casting of Threlfall is especially interesting, as the Sorting Hat is a character whose personality is conveyed entirely through its voice. Fans will be keen to hear how the actor approaches the enchanted object’s distinctive personality.
Who is already starring in the Harry Potter series?
The new announcements join an impressive ensemble of established actors and emerging talent.
The three central characters will be played by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
They will be joined by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Other previously announced members of the first-season cast include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Tristan Harland as Fred Weasley, Gabriel Harland as George Weasley, Ruari Spooner as Percy Weasley, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe and William Nash as Gregory Goyle.
Warwick Davis will play Filius Flitwick, with Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout.
The Dursley family will also feature prominently, with Daniel Rigby playing Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley and Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley.
Other familiar faces include Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.
The wider cast also includes Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, Richard Durden as Cuthbert Binns, Louise Brealey as Rolanda Hooch, Bríd Brennan as Poppy Pomfrey, Leigh Gill as Griphook and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
Completing the previously announced first-season cast are Harry Gilby as Charlie Weasley, Jasper Talbot as James Potter and Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter.
Season two cast also begins to take shape
Although HBO’s first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, casting announcements have already started building anticipation for the second season.
The previously announced season two additions include some major characters from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart, the flamboyant Defence Against the Dark Arts professor who arrives at Hogwarts with a rather inflated opinion of his own achievements.
Bonnie Hill will take on the role of Ginny Weasley for the second season, while Lenny Rush will provide the voice of Dobby, the house-elf who becomes an important part of Harry’s adventures.
Other additions include Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle, Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley, Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle and Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey.
The growing second-season cast suggests HBO is already looking ahead to bringing more of the original book series to television.
What is the new Harry Potter series about?
The first season is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and will follow the story of the first book in J.K. Rowling’s hugely successful fantasy series.
The official synopsis reads:
“There is nothing special about Harry Potter – or so his Aunt Petunia tells him. But when a mysterious letter of admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry arrives, it opens the door to a hidden world of magic, friendship and adventure. Yet behind Hogwarts’ enchanted walls lie dark secrets. Harry must find the courage to prove himself against the darkest wizard of all.”
The story begins with Harry living an unhappy life with the Dursleys, unaware that he is a wizard and that his parents died at the hands of the dark wizard Lord Voldemort.
Everything changes when Hagrid arrives to tell him about his magical heritage and invites him to attend Hogwarts.
There, Harry meets Ron and Hermione, forms friendships, discovers his magical abilities and begins uncovering the mystery surrounding his past.
The television adaptation is intended to give the books more room to breathe than the original film series, with the ambition of exploring the characters, storylines and details that readers have come to love.
Who is behind the HBO Harry Potter series?
The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, who is also known for her work on Succession and Killing Eve.
Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes. His previous directing credits include Game of Thrones, The Last of Us and Succession.
The series is being made for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
Executive producers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, David Heyman of Heyday Films, Laura Neal and Jon Brown.
Rowling’s involvement as an executive producer means the new adaptation will have a connection to the original author and the world she created.
When does the new Harry Potter series start?
Fans will not have too long to wait to return to Hogwarts.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day, 25 December 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
The first season will consist of eight episodes and will be available to stream on HBO Max in supported territories.
The series is expected to introduce the wizarding world to a new generation while giving existing fans another opportunity to experience Harry’s story.
A new generation of Harry Potter begins
With an expanding cast, a fresh creative team and the opportunity to explore the books in greater detail, HBO’s Harry Potter series is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated television adaptations.
The latest casting announcement also demonstrates how much attention is being given to the smaller details of Hogwarts, from its eccentric portraits to its collection of ghosts and enchanted objects.
And with characters from the second book already being cast, there is plenty more magic to come.
The countdown to Christmas at Hogwarts has officially begun.
