It follows the phenomenal success of Sky’s three-part documentary Boyzone: No Matter What, which reignited interest in one of the biggest Irish pop groups of the 1990s and prompted an extraordinary response from fans around the world.

This time, however, the focus is on the band’s final chapter and their determination to give themselves and their loyal supporters the farewell they deserve.

Boyzone’s incredible rise to fame

Formed in Dublin in 1993 by music manager Louis Walsh, Boyzone quickly became one of the most successful boybands of the decade.

The original five-piece line-up consisted of Ronan Keating, Stephen Gately, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham.

Their breakthrough came with a cover of Love Me For A Reason, which reached number two in the UK singles chart in 1994. It marked the beginning of an extraordinary run of success that would see the group become one of Britain’s biggest-selling acts.

Other early hits included Key to My Life, So Good and Father and Son, helping establish their reputation for catchy pop songs and emotional ballads.

In 1996, Boyzone secured their first UK number one single with Words, a cover of the Bee Gees classic. They followed it with further chart-toppers including A Different Beat, All That I Need, No Matter What, When the Going Gets Tough and You Needed Me.

Their success extended beyond singles, with five UK number one albums, including Said and Done, A Different Beat, Where We Belong, By Request and Brother.

At the height of their popularity, Boyzone were selling millions of records, playing major venues and attracting an enormous international following.

The group initially split in 2000, with members pursuing individual projects. Ronan Keating went on to enjoy a successful solo career, while Keith Duffy developed his acting career, appearing in television drama Coronation Street.

Mikey Graham also explored solo music, releasing his album Meet Me Halfway, while Shane Lynch pursued other interests including motorsport.

Stephen Gately’s death changed everything

Boyzone’s story has also been marked by tragedy.

Stephen Gately died suddenly in October 2009, aged just 33, while on holiday in Mallorca.

His death devastated his bandmates and fans, particularly as the group had reunited the previous year and were enjoying a successful return to performing together.

Boyzone continued as a four-piece, but Stephen’s memory remained central to their music and performances.

Their 2010 album Brother was dedicated to him, with the title reflecting the close bond between the bandmates.

Tonight’s farewell concert at the Emirates Stadium in north London will once again honour Stephen’s legacy, ensuring that he remains part of the band’s final chapter.

Why are Boyzone reuniting for one last time?

Although Boyzone previously brought their touring career to an end in 2019, their story was not quite finished.

Following the success of No Matter What, the renewed interest in the band helped bring the surviving members back together.

One for the Road explores what happened behind the scenes as they prepared for their final performances, including the personal history and unresolved issues that needed to be addressed before they could share the stage again.

Against the backdrop of thousands of expectant fans, the documentary promises an honest look at the relationships between the four men and the pressures that come with revisiting such an important part of their lives.

This time, they want to say goodbye on their own terms and deliver the send-off they and their fans have been waiting for.

Mikey Graham also returns to the stage for a number of highlight performances, making the reunion particularly special for those who have followed the group since their early days.

What have Sky said about the new Boyzone documentary?

Executive producer Dov Freedman said the response to the previous documentary had been exceptional.

“The response to the series was incredible, breaking records for the Sky Docs team. I think audiences really engaged in a celebrity doc with such raw truth and honesty” says Exec Producer Dov Freedman. “We’re incredibly privileged to be working with the boys again and telling the story of their final chapter”

Hayley Reynolds, Head of Documentary Commissioning at Sky, also spoke about the decision to revisit the band’s story.

“Boyzone: No Matter What sparked an extraordinary outpouring of love for the band, and we’re thrilled to be working with Curious again to document this landmark reunion — something that may never have happened had the boys not approached telling their story with such honesty and candid testimony.”

Described as warm, funny, raw and revealing, One for the Road explores friendship, forgiveness, ageing and legacy, as well as the enduring relationship between Boyzone and the fans who have supported them throughout their career.

Boyzone’s final ever concert follows at 10pm

For viewers who want to see the band back where they belong, the evening doesn’t end with the documentary.

Immediately afterwards, Sky will broadcast Boyzone: The Final Concert, airing from 10pm until 11.30pm.

The farewell performance at Emirates Stadium in north London celebrates the band’s remarkable legacy and pays tribute to Stephen Gately, whose presence is still felt throughout their music.

It offers fans the opportunity to revisit the group’s greatest moments and enjoy one final celebration of the songs that made them household names.

From Love Me For A Reason and Words to No Matter What and Picture of You, Boyzone’s catalogue remains one of the defining soundtracks of 1990s pop.

For the four surviving members, the performances represent more than simply another reunion. They are an opportunity to reflect on decades of friendship, success, personal challenges and the memories they have created together.
