The Great British Bake Off is turning up the heat next week as the competition reaches its quarter-final, with caramel set to take centre stage in three demanding challenges that will test the remaining bakers’ skills, patience and creativity.
With the competition getting closer to its grand final, there is little room for mistakes as Paul Hollywood and new judge Nigella Lawson put the contestants through their paces in one of the most demanding weeks of the series so far.
The new episode will see Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond return to the famous tent as the bakers tackle a classic treacle tart Signature, a towering millionaire shortbread Technical and an ambitious nougatine sculpture Showstopper.
And with a place in the semi-final hanging in the balance, the pressure will be firmly on. Who will ooze caramel confidence, and whose baking ambitions will crumble under the strain?
What is the theme for next week’s Bake Off quarter-final?
It’s caramel week, and the challenges promise to be particularly testing.
First up, the bakers must impress the judges with their take on a traditional treacle tart in the Signature challenge. Although it might sound like a relatively straightforward British classic, getting the pastry, filling and balance of sweetness just right will be essential.
Next comes the Technical, where the contestants face the daunting task of producing a towering millionaire shortbread. With its layers of biscuit, caramel and chocolate, this is a bake where precision is everything. The caramel must have the right consistency, the layers need to be neatly assembled and the finished creation must be impressive enough to satisfy the judges.
Finally, the Showstopper raises the stakes even further, with the bakers challenged to create spectacular nougatine sculpture showpieces.
Nougatine is a notoriously demanding confection made using caramelised sugar and nuts, requiring considerable technical skill to shape and assemble. It is the sort of challenge where one small mistake could have disastrous consequences, particularly when the contestants are attempting elaborate structures under time pressure.
With the semi-final within touching distance, the bakers will need to produce something truly special if they are to survive another week in the tent.
Bake Off continues to be a huge ratings success
There is clearly still plenty of appetite for Bake Off, with this year’s series proving a major ratings success for Channel 4.
The 17th series launched in September with Nigella Lawson making her debut as a judge alongside Paul Hollywood, taking over from Prue Leith after her departure.
And viewers have responded enthusiastically. The opening episode attracted approximately 7.1 million viewers in its first seven days, beating the launch of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, which attracted around 6.4 million during the same period.
Even more impressively, Bake Off has continued to outperform Strictly in the seven-day consolidated ratings for subsequent episodes, underlining its position as one of Britain’s most popular entertainment programmes. Radio Times+1
Nigella’s arrival has undoubtedly given the familiar format a fresh dimension, with her trademark enthusiasm, colourful descriptions and passion for food adding something different to the judging partnership.
Alongside Paul, she has proved a popular addition to the tent, while Noel and Alison continue to provide the laughs and encouragement as the challenges become increasingly difficult.
Is there a new Great British Bake Off book?

With the quarter-final approaching, the remaining bakers will need to bring their A-game. Caramel can be notoriously unforgiving, and with a semi-final place at stake, even the smallest mistake could prove costly.
