bake off biscuit week

The Great British Bake Off is bringing back Free-From Week for the first time in five years, with the bakers facing a fresh set of gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan challenges as the hit Channel 4 series continues its ratings success.

The much-loved theme returns on Tuesday, 3 November, as the competition reaches week seven and the remaining contestants fight for a place in the quarter-final. With a place in the next round at stake, the bakers will need to prove that free-from baking can deliver all the flavour, creativity and showstopping spectacle the series is famous for.

  • Bake Off’s Free-From Week returns on Tuesday, 3 November, for the first time since 2021.
  • The 2026 series has attracted a bumper audience, with its return pulling in more than 7.1 million viewers in the consolidated ratings.

Bake Off’s bumper ratings success

The Great British Bake Off has enjoyed an impressive start to its latest series, underlining its enduring appeal with viewers. Its opening episode attracted approximately 7.19 million viewers in the seven-day consolidated ratings for the week of 21–27 September, putting the Channel 4 favourite ahead of its nearest competition, Strictly Come Dancing, which drew around 6.2 million.

The figures represent a strong result for the baking competition, which continues to bring audiences together for a weekly mix of kitchen disasters, inventive creations, emotional moments and Paul Hollywood’s famously coveted handshake.

With the competition now moving towards its quarter-final, the return of a much-loved theme gives viewers another reason to tune in as the pressure rises inside the famous tent.

Gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan bakes take centre stage

Free-From Week last featured in the competition in 2021, and its return will put the bakers’ versatility to the test. Whether they are working without gluten, dairy or animal products, they will need to show that adapting a recipe does not mean sacrificing taste or ambition.

As ever, the episode promises the familiar Bake Off mix of salivating Signature bakes, tantalising Technical challenges and sensational Showstoppers. The contestants will have to balance flavour and presentation while tackling the particular demands of free-from baking.

The theme also offers an opportunity to demonstrate just how creative baking can be when traditional ingredients are off the menu. But with the quarter-final within reach, there will be little room for mistakes.

Who will rise to the occasion and prove that different can still be delicious — and whose Bake Off journey will come to an end?

Nigella Lawson joins Paul Hollywood in the tent

This year’s bakers are being guided through the competition by a familiar presenting duo, with Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond keeping spirits high as the challenges become more demanding.

They are joined by judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson, who are tasked with deciding which creations impress and which contestants fall short. Nigella’s arrival as a judge has added a new flavour to the series, while Hollywood remains the familiar authority on technical skill and consistency.

As the series reaches its seventh week, every challenge matters. With the quarter-final looming, Free-From Week could prove a crucial test of the bakers’ ability to adapt, innovate and deliver under pressure.
