The new three-part series will see Cunk turn her attention to the history of cinema, examining everything from the invention of the camera and the rise of Hollywood to the New Wave movement, CGI and the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the future of filmmaking.
Cunk on Cinema will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two, with the series also set to arrive on Netflix outside the UK and Ireland.
Diane Morgan returns as Philomena Cunk
Diane Morgan reprises her role as Philomena Cunk, the fictional documentary presenter whose trademark approach to serious subjects has made the Cunk franchise a cult favourite.
This time, Cunk is attempting to understand humanity’s enduring obsession with movies, while questioning the experts who have dedicated their careers to understanding the medium.
Among the contributors appearing in Cunk on Cinema are Transformers and Bad Boys director Michael Bay, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, composer Daniel Pemberton, Die Hard screenwriter Steven E. de Souza and cinematographer Seamus McGarvey.
Film critics and historians also featuring include Mark Kermode, Mark Cousins, Isabel Stevens of Sight and Sound, Empire editor-at-large Helen O’Hara, Screen International critic Catherine Bray and BFI silent film curator Bryony Dixon.
What is Cunk on Cinema about?
The three-part series promises to take a suitably unconventional journey through the history of film.
Cunk will investigate how cinema began and why it became such an important part of popular culture, before moving through major developments in filmmaking and the changing technology behind movies.
The series will cover the filmmakers of the 1960s New Wave, the arrival of computer-generated imagery and the increasingly important role artificial intelligence could play in the future of cinema.
As ever, Cunk’s investigations will involve asking experts questions that attempt to tackle the biggest issues in film – while approaching them from a distinctly unconventional perspective.
Cunk on Cinema BBC release details
Cunk on Cinema consists of three 30-minute episodes and is produced by Pacesetter Productions for the BBC.
Charlie Brooker leads the writing team alongside Ben Caudell, Erika Ehler, Eli Goldstone, Jason Hazeley, Dan Maier, Diane Morgan, Joel Morris, Michael Odewale, Kali Varghese and Sam Ward.
Al Campbell directs the series, with Charlie Brooker, Jessica Rhoades, Diane Morgan and Sam Ward serving as executive producers. Navi Lamba is the BBC commissioning editor, while Mark Kinsella is co-executive producer for Pacesetter Productions.
The series follows previous entries in the franchise including Cunk on Life, Cunk on Earth, Cunk on Shakespeare and Cunk on Britain.
Where to watch Cunk on Cinema
Cunk on Cinema will debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two in the UK. Netflix will release the series internationally outside the UK and Ireland.
