Wondering where you can watch James Acaster do comedy? Fans of the reluctant Traitor can catch James Acaster on Sky Comedy this Sunday night at 9pm, with his stand-up special Heckler’s Welcome bringing his trademark chaotic humour to the screen.
The Off Menu podcast co-host returns to the stage in a show filmed in front of a live audience at the Royal & Derngate Theatre in Northampton, close to his hometown of Kettering.
James Acaster takes on the hecklers
In Heckler’s Welcome, Acaster invites the audience to interrupt his carefully crafted routine, setting the scene for a stand-up performance that can veer off in unexpected directions.
As he mines his childhood experiences for laughs, the comedian trades barbs with audience members and reflects on his complicated relationship with performing. Phone calls, trips to the loo and other interruptions all become part of the fun as Acaster attempts to keep his show on track.
Rather than simply battling against distractions, he embraces the chaos, creating an unpredictable set in which the audience becomes part of the comedy.
Filmed in his home county, the special offers a particularly personal setting for Acaster, whose distinctive delivery and willingness to take his material in unusual directions have made him a familiar face on British television.
From Bake Off breakdown to comedy star
Acaster shot to wider cult fame with his memorable appearance on The Great Celebrity Bake Off in 2019. His now-famous summary of a baking disaster — “Started making it. Had a breakdown. Bon appetit” — became an instant talking point.
Away from the baking tent, he has built a successful career through stand-up specials, television appearances and his hugely popular Off Menu podcast, which he co-hosts with fellow comedian Ed Gamble.
He is also appearing in The Celebrity Traitors, adding another television outing to his growing list of screen appearances.
