BFI London Film Festival Premieres ‘Elsinore’: Andrew Scott Delivers a Career-Defining Triumph in Moving Ian Charleson Biopic

The 70th BFI London Film Festival officially kicked off tonight with the world premiere of Elsinore, a devastating, deeply moving, and ultimately inspiring drama that has sent shockwaves through the festival circuit. Directed by Simon Stone (The Dig) from a screenplay by Stephen Beresford (Pride), the film chronicles the extraordinary true story of Scottish actor Ian Charleson during the final, fraught chapter of his life.

Led by a towering lead performance from Andrew Scott, word on the festival scene is unanimous: Elsinore features Scott’s absolute finest work to date, firmly positioning the acclaimed Irish actor as a frontrunner for the Best Actor Oscar.

What and Who Elsinore Is About

Set against the backdrop of grainy 1989 London, Elsinore tells the heroic real-life account of actor Ian Charleson (played by Andrew Scott). Charleson, who catapulted to international fame as Olympic runner Eric Liddell in the Oscar-winning 1981 film Chariots of Fire, found himself facing the ultimate crisis when he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at the height of the epidemic.

The central narrative unfolds when Daniel Day-Lewis famously walked off stage during a production of Hamlet at London’s Royal National Theatre. Offered the daunting opportunity of a lifetime to take over the titular role, Charleson accepted despite being severely ill with AIDS-related complications.

Elsinore follows Charleson’s battle against fading physical strength and immense personal odds as he rehearsed for the stage. Knowing that the physical toll of performing Shakespeare’s most demanding role would likely accelerate his illness, Charleson channeled his own mortality, courage, and wit directly into the performance. His portrayal of Hamlet became a landmark cultural achievement and a symbol of resistance and grace before his tragic death just months later.

A Stellar Ensemble Supporting an Oscar-Worthy Performance

While Andrew Scott commands the screen with what critics are calling a career-defining turn, Elsinore features a powerful ensemble cast of British screen and stage talent:

Olivia Colman as Dr. Margaret Johnson, a pioneering physician at the Royal Free Hospital specializing in AIDS treatment.

Juliet Stevenson and Peter Mullan in pivotal supporting roles that highlight the emotional weight of Charleson’s inner circle.

Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, Adeel Akhtar, and Paul Chahidi rounding out a dynamic theatrical cast that brings the bustling backstage atmosphere of the National Theatre to life.

The film also captures the broader artistic community of the era, including appearances highlighting real-life figures like radical filmmaker Derek Jarman (played by David Dawson).

Oscar Buzz and Festival Reception

Following tonight’s Opening Night Gala screening at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, early reaction has focused heavily on Andrew Scott. Having previously garnered universal acclaim for Fleabag, Ripley, and All of Us Strangers, industry insiders suggest Elsinore will be the vehicle that finally brings Scott his long-overdue Academy Award recognition.

By embodying a historic queer icon whose art directly mirrored his fight for survival, Scott delivers a performance marked by humor, heartbreak, and sheer artistic authority.
