Robert Pattinson says he is preparing to return to set for The Batman Part II, with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to help Matt Reeves complete the long-awaited DC sequel.
Production on The Batman Part II is moving forward again after a brief pause prompted by a family issue involving director Matt Reeves, with Robert Pattinson confirming that filming is resuming and praising filmmaker Steven Soderbergh for stepping in to support the project.
In a new interview with GamesRadar, reported by Deadline, Pattinson indicated that work on the sequel was already underway and that he was preparing to join the production within days.
“I think they’re in production already,” Pattinson told Games Radar in a new interview. “And I’m starting in a couple of days.
The development comes after filming, which had been taking place in London, was temporarily interrupted earlier this month. Soderbergh has since offered his assistance to Reeves, helping the filmmaker bring the production through its remaining weeks while remaining committed to the director’s creative vision.
Pattinson expressed his gratitude for Soderbergh’s involvement, describing the filmmaker’s offer to help as a generous gesture at a crucial stage of the production.
“I am so happy he’s [Soderbergh] come on to help Matt,” Pattinson said. “It’s incredibly generous of him – and he’s doing it in the loveliest way. It’s completely selfless…I think Matt had put so much work into the script, and we’re almost done. So for someone to come in and say, ‘I just want to help Matt do it; I want to do it in conjunction with him and just get it to the edit.’ And to have someone who’s as talented as Steven doing it is great.”
Steven Soderbergh steps in to support Matt Reeves
Soderbergh’s involvement is a significant development for the highly anticipated sequel, which follows Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman. Rather than replacing Reeves, the acclaimed director is working alongside him to help complete the remaining production work and preserve his approach to the film.
DC confirmed the arrangement in a statement, saying Soderbergh will “complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II,” and that “Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”
Soderbergh is known for his work across a wide range of genres, with credits including Ocean’s Eleven, Traffic and Contagion. His experience behind the camera makes him a notable addition to the production, although the precise details of his day-to-day responsibilities on the sequel have not been publicly outlined.
Pattinson’s comments also suggest that the film has made substantial progress, with the actor indicating that the script is nearing completion and the production moving towards the editing stage. However, further details about the remaining shoot and the extent of Soderbergh’s contribution have yet to be confirmed.
What we know about The Batman Part II so far
The sequel is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 18 February 2028, returning audiences to the crime-ridden Gotham City established in Reeves’ first film.
Pattinson will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, continuing his portrayal of a younger Batman still developing his identity as Gotham’s masked vigilante. The 2022 film explored a city plagued by corruption, organised crime and the Riddler’s murderous campaign, setting up a darker, detective-focused interpretation of the DC character.
Reeves is returning as director and has been developing the follow-up with a focus on continuing the story established in the first instalment. The sequel forms part of the separate Batman film universe overseen by Reeves, distinct from the main DC Universe being developed under DC Studios leadership.
Although plot details remain tightly guarded, the first film’s ending left Gotham facing the consequences of widespread flooding and a major breakdown in public order. The sequel has the opportunity to explore the city’s recovery and the challenges facing Batman as he continues his campaign against crime. These remain potential story directions rather than confirmed plot details.
The film’s lengthy development has also heightened anticipation among fans. Reeves’ original The Batman was praised for its noir-inspired atmosphere, grounded approach to the superhero genre and Pattinson’s interpretation of the Caped Crusader.
Robert Pattinson leads a returning and expanded cast
Pattinson will once again lead the film as Batman, joined by several familiar faces from the first instalment.
Andy Serkis is returning as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s trusted confidant and guardian, while Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot, better known as the Penguin.
Farrell’s return is particularly notable following the success of The Penguin, the HBO crime drama that expanded on the character’s rise through Gotham’s criminal underworld after the events of the first film.
The sequel will also introduce several new cast members, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.
Their character details and the extent of their roles have not all been publicly confirmed, leaving considerable room for speculation about how they will fit into Reeves’ expanding Gotham story.
Johansson’s casting has attracted particular attention given her high-profile work in major franchises, while Stan’s addition brings another established screen presence to the ensemble. However, neither actor’s role should be assumed to involve a particular comic-book character until official details are released.
When will The Batman Part II be released?
Despite the temporary production interruption, the film’s announced theatrical release date remains 18 February 2028.
Pattinson’s confirmation that he is preparing to return to filming offers a positive update for a project that has faced a lengthy development period. Soderbergh’s involvement also provides additional support as Reeves works towards completing the sequel.
For now, fans will have to wait for further announcements about the story, character reveals and the first footage from the film. With Pattinson returning to the role and the original creative team continuing to shape the project, The Batman Part II remains one of DC’s most anticipated upcoming releases.
