Ed Sheeran left fans stunned during his return to the stage on Saturday night, delivering an emotional address where he admitted making mistakes, reflected on the intense strain on his career, and apologized for the political firestorm surrounding his ongoing tour.

Taking the stage solo at the Lincoln Financial Field Stadium in Philadelphia, the 35-year-old singer-songwriter appeared visibly moved as he directly addressed the controversy for the first time since US rapper Macklemore was removed from his tour line-up over pro-Palestinian comments.

Reflecting on the whirlwind of public backlash, venue owner ultimatums, and artist withdrawals that rocked his team over the past week, Sheeran admitted the intense scrutiny had led him to question his place in the industry while apologizing directly to his audience.

”Ive had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes and I’m so, so sorry for them, Sheeran told the audience.

”I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet.”

The hitmaker explained that while he had always tried to avoid being a “political commentator” in order to keep his shows focused on “unity,” he felt compelled to speak on the devastating humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Middle East.

”But this is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore” he said.

”What happened in Israel and at the Nova music festival on October 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain.”

He continued:”What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, children’s lives. And the systemic injustice we are seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.”

Admitting to the Philadelphia crowd that he did not know what this audience would be like before stepping out and questioning if fans would be angry with him, Sheeran expressed deep gratitude for the fans who turned out to support him.

Getting emotional, Sheeran told concertgoers: “I am honestly so grateful that you’re here tonight with me.”

”This concert is still a place where everyone is welcome and everyone here can stand beside people that have opposing views.”
