Spice Girls TV drama is still in the works

A long-awaited TV drama about the Spice Girls appears to be moving forward again, despite previous reports that the project had stalled amid tensions within the group.

According to The Sun, writer Jack Rooke has confirmed that work on the proposed Netflix project is continuing, with a script now completed.

Rooke, the BAFTA-winning creator of Big Boys, said the project is intended to be more than a conventional music biopic.

“I’ve been developing something that is, I would say, more than a music biopic,” he said, describing it as a “fun comedy drama”.

The writer also revealed that discussions surrounding the project remain ongoing and suggested the Spice Girls themselves could still have a say in its future.

“There has been a script written with me and a lovely little group of gals and gays,” Rooke said.

The development marks a change in fortunes for the project, which had previously been reported as shelved after failing to reach the commissioning stage at Netflix.

The drama had been linked to the band’s 30th anniversary, with The Crown producer Suzanne Mackie also involved in its development. However, difficulties surrounding the group’s reunion plans reportedly complicated progress.

The Spice Girls — Victoria Beckham, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Mel B and Geri Horner — had been discussing ways to mark three decades since their breakthrough single Wannabe.

Those plans ultimately failed to produce a full five-member comeback, with the group last performing together at the London Olympics in 2012. Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Geri Horner did reunite for a stadium tour in 2019, but Victoria Beckham did not take part.

Relations between some members have also been reported as strained, particularly between Geri and Mel B.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding a potential reunion, Rooke remains enthusiastic about telling the band’s story.

He has argued that the Spice Girls represent an important moment in British pop culture, particularly in their depiction of ambitious working-class women.

Rooke also suggested that the group’s story could lend itself to a large-scale comedy drama, saying: “We need a big comedy rump about the Spice Girls.”

For now, there is no confirmed release date, and Rooke has not indicated that Netflix has formally commissioned the series. It is also unclear whether all five members of the Spice Girls have approved the project.

The latest comments nevertheless suggest the drama has not disappeared entirely — and that fans may yet see the Spice Girls’ story recreated on screen.
