TV Mathematician is currently appearing in The Celebrity Traitors
Professor Hannah Fry is one of Britain’s best-known mathematicians and science communicators — but her appearance on The Celebrity Traitors is likely to introduce her to an even bigger television audience.
Fry has spent more than a decade turning complicated mathematical ideas into accessible, entertaining television, radio, podcasts, books and online videos. She is also an academic, and in 2025 became the University of Cambridge’s first Professor of the Public Understanding of Mathematics.
Now she is swapping mathematical models for the much less predictable world of Claudia Winkleman’s castle.
Who is Hannah Fry?
Hannah Fry is a mathematician, author and broadcaster who specialises in communicating mathematics and applying it to real-world problems.
Her academic work has included studying patterns in human behaviour, particularly in cities. At University College London she was Professor of the Mathematics of Cities, with research covering subjects including transport, shopping, urban crime and other aspects of how people behave in built-up environments.
In January 2025, Fry joined the University of Cambridge as its first-ever Professor of the Public Understanding of Mathematics. Her role is specifically focused on helping communicate mathematical ideas to wider audiences.
Her academic credentials have also been recognised with major awards. In July 2026 she received the Leelavati Prize at the International Congress of Mathematicians for her contribution to raising public awareness of mathematics. Cambridge described her as one of the foremost ambassadors for mathematical thinking.
What is Hannah Fry famous for?
For many television viewers, Fry is best known for making mathematics accessible without making it feel like a maths lesson.
She has presented and appeared in a range of BBC programmes, including Horizon, The Joy of Data, The Joy of Winning, City in the Sky, Contagion! The BBC Four Pandemic and Calculating Ada. She also presented Magic Numbers: Hannah Fry’s Mysterious World of Maths.
She is also associated with The Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry, the BBC Radio 4 programme she co-presents with Adam Rutherford, as well as other radio and podcast projects.
Her work extends well beyond traditional television. Fry has built a substantial online audience through videos explaining mathematics, science, statistics and technology, while her book Hello World: How to be Human in the Age of the Machine explored the growing role of algorithms and artificial intelligence in everyday life.
She has also become a familiar face during major news events, including Channel 4’s 2024 General Election coverage, where she helped explain mathematical and statistical information to viewers.
Why is Hannah Fry on The Celebrity Traitors?
Fry is one of 21 celebrities taking part in the second series of The Celebrity Traitors, alongside the likes of Michael Sheen, Richard E Grant, Bella Ramsey, James Blunt, Maya Jama, Miranda Hart and Romesh Ranganathan.
The show gives celebrities the chance to win up to £100,000 for their chosen charity while attempting to identify the Traitors hiding among them.
For Fry, however, the format presents an unusually appropriate challenge.
She has openly discussed using her mathematical knowledge to prepare for the game. Before filming, she went back through previous series and analysed them looking for statistically significant patterns in the behaviour of Traitors.
One of the patterns she identified concerned so-called “burn votes”, where Traitors can put suspicion onto another contestant in the early stages of the game in an attempt to divert attention from themselves.
Fry has compared this kind of analysis with the statistical thinking associated with Alan Turing’s codebreaking work during the Second World War.
She has also described herself as “toxically competitive”, suggesting that she isn’t entering the castle simply for the experience.
Could Hannah Fry win The Celebrity Traitors?
There is no reliable way to calculate an individual’s actual chances of winning The Celebrity Traitors before the game plays out. The outcome depends on factors including whether Fry is selected as a Traitor or Faithful, the decisions made by the other contestants, the murders and banishments, and how successfully she manages her relationships in the castle.
What makes Fry particularly interesting is that she has prepared for precisely the sort of uncertainty the show creates.
Her mathematical analysis could potentially help her recognise patterns in voting and behaviour. But mathematics has an obvious limitation in a game built around people deliberately trying to deceive one another. A statistically unusual action does not necessarily mean somebody is a Traitor — and Fry herself has acknowledged that the Faithfuls’ behaviour can make it difficult to distinguish a genuine pattern from noise.
There is also the question of whether being known as “the mathematician” works for or against her. The other contestants know that Fry has been studying the game, which could make them wary of her analysis. Conversely, if she is a Traitor, her reputation for rationality could potentially make other players question whether their suspicions are justified.
Ahead of the series, betting markets did not put Fry among the leading names. One market published on 29 September listed her at 16/1, corresponding to an implied probability of 5.9%. Those figures are bookmaker-market assessments rather than a scientific prediction of what will happen, and odds can change as the series progresses.
The first episode has now aired, but it is still far too early to know how Fry’s strategy will develop. What is certain is that she has entered the castle with something few other contestants possess: years of experience analysing patterns, probability and human behaviour.
Whether that gives her an advantage — or simply makes everyone else suspicious of her — is one of the more intriguing questions of this year’s Celebrity Traitors.
Where can you watch Hannah Fry on The Celebrity Traitors?
The Celebrity Traitors airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with Claudia Winkleman returning as host. The second series began on 1 October 2026 and runs on Thursday and Friday evenings.
And with the opening episode attracting an overnight audience of 8.9 million viewers, there is certainly a huge audience watching to see whether Fry’s mathematical approach can survive the castle.
