Blue Lights Episode 2 Preview: Grace Is Put in Danger as Tensions Explode in Belfast

blue lights series 4 episode 2

The pressure on Blackthorn police station is about to intensify as Blue Lights returns for the second episode of its fourth series, tonight (Tuesday 6 October, 2026).

Titled “Numbers”, tonight’s episode follows the fallout from the attack on Amira, with Grace Ellis finding herself increasingly determined to uncover the truth — even if doing so puts her own safety at risk. Meanwhile, Mo’s situation takes a darker turn, threatening to unleash violent consequences.

The episode airs Tuesday, October 6 at 9pm on BBC One, but the episode also available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Blue Lights is an exceptional drama and well worth investing in. You can read our season 4, episode 1 review piece here.

Grace refuses to back down

Grace has never been someone to simply accept that a difficult situation is beyond her control, but her determination comes at a potentially serious cost in this episode.

Following the attack on Amira, questions remain about what happened and why. As Grace starts pushing for answers, she finds herself getting closer to a situation that could place her directly in danger.

That creates an interesting tension at the heart of the episode. Grace is a police officer whose instinct is to pursue the truth, but Blue Lights has consistently shown that doing the right thing does not necessarily mean there will be a straightforward or safe path towards justice.

With tensions already running high across Belfast, Grace’s investigation threatens to pull her deeper into a dangerous situation.

Belfast on the brink

The wider atmosphere surrounding the police is becoming increasingly difficult to contain.

The new series has already placed the officers against a backdrop of community unrest, strained resources and growing pressure on Blackthorn station. The first episode saw tensions escalate dramatically, while the season as a whole is building towards a much larger story involving crime, policing and the long shadow of events from the past.

Episode two appears set to continue that trajectory rather than allowing the characters any time to breathe.

For Grace, Annie and Tommy, the job is becoming about more than simply responding to individual incidents. They are having to navigate an increasingly complicated web of relationships, loyalties and competing interests — where the people involved may not always be telling the whole truth.

Mo’s story takes a darker turn

Away from Grace’s investigation, Mo is also heading towards a crisis.

The official synopsis teases that Mo will spiral further, with his situation leading to violent consequences.

That storyline gives the episode another layer of tension. Rather than presenting crime as something that exists separately from the lives of the people caught up in it, Blue Lights continues to explore how pressure can build until characters reach a breaking point.

Mo is also connected to one of the season’s biggest unresolved questions: the murder of Gerry Cliff.

That storyline is set to become increasingly important as the fourth series progresses, with the forthcoming murder trial bringing old questions about Gerry’s death back into focus.

Gerry Cliff’s shadow looms large

The return of Richard Dormer as Gerry Cliff is one of the most intriguing elements of the new series.

Dormer, who originally played Gerry in the first series, returns alongside Hannah McClean as solicitor Jen Robinson and Jonathan Harden as disgraced former Inspector Jonty.

Their presence signals that the show’s past is far from finished with its present-day characters.

Gerry’s murder has remained one of the defining events in Blue Lights, and the fourth series is beginning to explore the consequences from multiple angles. His story is not simply a question of what happened in the past — it has implications for the officers and wider criminal investigation unfolding now.

That makes every revelation potentially significant.

Justice is becoming a complicated question

One of the strengths of Blue Lights has always been its refusal to make policing feel simple.

There are arrests, investigations and suspects, but there are also relationships, institutional pressures and decisions made behind closed doors. Episode two appears to lean heavily into that idea, with Grace, Annie and Tommy increasingly questioning whether justice can actually be achieved when so many other forces are influencing what happens.

The title “Numbers” may prove particularly appropriate as the officers find themselves dealing with the practical realities of policing alongside the much bigger moral questions surrounding their work.

For Grace, the danger is that pursuing justice could mean putting herself in the firing line.

For Mo, the consequences of his actions appear to be becoming increasingly difficult to contain.

And for the team at Blackthorn, the events unfolding across Belfast threaten to become something much bigger than a routine policing operation.

What to expect from tonight’s episode

Without giving away the twists, viewers can expect another tense instalment built around three central themes: the fallout from Amira’s attack, Grace’s determination to find answers and Mo’s increasingly dangerous situation.

The episode is also likely to continue laying the groundwork for the bigger story surrounding Gerry Cliff and the questions that have remained unresolved since his death.

With six episodes making up the fourth series, there is still plenty of story to come. This is a drama that punches above its weight, perhaps the most realistic and gritty police drama there is. It avoids some of the soapy and obvious drama cliches that Line Of Duty can be slipping into, and instead, doesn’t shy away from modern policing.

And if Blue Lights has taught its viewers anything, it is that the line between a routine police job and something far more dangerous can disappear very quickly.

“Numbers” airs tonight, Tuesday, October 6, at 9pm on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
