Boyzone fans have another opportunity to relive an unforgettable chapter in the story of one of Britain’s most successful pop groups tonight, as Boyzone: One for the Road gets another airing, this time on Sky One from 9pm.
Combining an intimate behind-the-scenes documentary with a spectacular concert performance, the programme captures a particularly emotional moment for Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham as they prepare to reunite for what promises to be their final chapter together.
For a band whose history stretches back more than three decades, it is a reunion that carries enormous significance. There have been extraordinary highs, difficult periods, personal challenges and moments of heartbreak along the way, but the bond between the four surviving members has endured. Now, with two landmark concerts at London’s Emirates Stadium planned for the summer, they are determined to give themselves and their devoted fans the send-off they have always wanted.
The programme follows the phenomenal response to Sky’s acclaimed three-part documentary Boyzone: No Matter What, which reignited affection for the group and encouraged audiences to look beyond the familiar hits and glossy pop image. That series proved a huge success for Sky Docs, breaking viewing records and prompting an extraordinary outpouring of support from fans around the world.
But while No Matter What looked back at the band’s remarkable history, One for the Road turns its attention to what happens next.
The cameras follow the group as they navigate the emotional and practical challenges of getting back together, with decades of shared memories inevitably bringing some unresolved issues to the surface. Their previous tour in 2019 ended with unfinished business, and this time the four men are determined to approach their reunion differently.
There is a lot riding on the concerts, not least the expectations of thousands of fans who have followed them throughout their career. Yet the documentary makes clear that this is about much more than simply performing a collection of old hits. It is about friendship, forgiveness, ageing and legacy, and the opportunity to close a significant chapter of their lives on their own terms.
Warm, funny, candid and occasionally painful, the film offers a revealing look at the relationships behind the music. The members of Boyzone have grown older, their lives have changed and their individual experiences have shaped the people they are today. But when they come together, there remains an unmistakable connection that has helped keep the group in the hearts of their supporters.
The concert footage provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate that connection, with a setlist packed with the songs that made Boyzone one of the defining boybands of the 1990s.
Fans can look forward to hearing favourites including A Different Beat, Love Is a Hurricane, So Good, Isn’t It a Wonder and Coming Home Now, alongside the emotional ballad Baby Can I Hold You, originally recorded by Tracy Chapman.
There are also performances of You Needed Me, All That I Need, Words and Better, while Gave It All Away and One More Song provide further reminders of the group’s musical journey. The setlist also features Key to My Life, I Love the Way You Love Me, Father and Son and the much-loved Every Day I Love You.
There are some particularly special moments along the way, including a performance of Words with Mikey Graham and Chills alongside Brian McFadden. The group also take on When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going, before delivering one of their most recognisable songs, No Matter What.
The main set continues with Who We Are, Love You Anyway and Love Me for a Reason, the Osmonds cover that helped introduce Boyzone to a generation of pop fans.
And there is no shortage of nostalgia when it comes to the encore. Best Night of Our Lives and Picture of You are followed by Ronan Keating’s hugely successful solo hit Life Is a Rollercoaster, providing a fitting finale to a celebration of the music that has connected the band with millions of people.
The documentary’s return to television also underlines just how powerful the Boyzone story remains. From their early days as a young Irish group with ambitions of conquering the pop charts to becoming one of the biggest acts of their generation, their journey has been anything but straightforward.
Their success produced an extraordinary run of hit singles, huge-selling albums and arena tours, while their music became the soundtrack to countless teenage memories. Yet the story has never been purely about chart positions and record sales. The group’s personal relationships, the pressures of fame and the tragic loss of Stephen Gately have all played an important part in shaping their history.
It is that honesty which made No Matter What such compelling viewing, and One for the Road builds on it by showing what happens when the past and present collide.
For the fans, it is a chance to celebrate the music and relive the excitement of seeing Boyzone together again. For the band themselves, it is an opportunity to reflect on everything they have achieved, confront the things left unsaid and give their supporters one final shared experience to treasure.
Whether you grew up with their music or simply appreciate a good story about friendship and second chances, there is plenty here to enjoy.
Boyzone: One for the Road is more than a concert film or another nostalgic trip back to the 1990s. It is a heartfelt celebration of a remarkable pop career, the complicated relationships behind it and the enduring connection between four musicians and the fans who have never stopped believing in them.
With the reunion concerts representing such a significant moment in the band’s history, this is an emotional journey well worth revisiting.
