Where to Watch: Eva Longoria: Searching for France is on BBC Two tonight at 6.50pm and is also available on BBC iPlayer.
It’s a joy to watch Eva Longoria unashamedly sample the finer things in life as she continues her delicious journey through France.
There are travel programmes that make you want to see the sights – and then there are those that make you immediately want to book a table. Eva Longoria: Searching for France is very much in the latter camp.
Tonight, Eva heads south to Provence, beginning in the port city of Marseilles, where she shares a spicy half-and-half pizza with local chef and rising star Valentin Ruffali. It’s an appropriately lively introduction to a city whose food culture is as colourful and multicultural as the city itself.
Next stop is La Ola, where Eva meets chef Khouloude Ben Thayer and tucks into her delicious blend of French and North African influences. The restaurant is known for its rotating roster of promising guest chefs, and Ben Thayer brings her Tunisian heritage to the kitchen.
There’s plenty more indulgence to come. Eva gets to sample the ancient and feted bouillabaisse, the iconic Provençal fish broth, before heading out into the sun-kissed landscape beyond Marseille.
As the journey reaches the French Riviera, the scenery becomes every bit as enticing as the food. Eva samples the traditional summer vegetable dish ratatouille before sitting down to a sun-drenched salade niçoise at the famous Hotel du Cap. The Riviera setting, naturally, is almost as much of a feast for the eyes as the lunch itself.
And that is the great pleasure of Searching for France. This isn’t a programme where Eva stands on the sidelines explaining French cuisine to us. She gets stuck in – tasting, cooking, chatting and, most importantly, enjoying herself.
There is something wonderfully unabashed about watching her embrace the pleasures on offer. From humble local specialities to dishes served in glamorous surroundings, Eva approaches every plate with infectious enthusiasm. It makes for television that is warm, colourful and, frankly, rather hungry-making.
The Provence episode is particularly easy to enjoy: glorious food, glorious scenery and a host who seems determined to make the most of every delicious moment.
Eva Longoria: Searching for France is on BBC Two tonight at 6.50pm and is also available on BBC iPlayer. The episode is the Provence instalment of the eight-part series.
