Tonight at 9pm on 5, Archie Panjabi and Paul Kaye lead The Quiet Hour, an intense hospital drama following an exhausted NHS nurse through one relentless night shift.
Play for Today returns with The Quiet Hour, a gripping, intimate drama that brings the pressures facing NHS staff into sharp focus. Starring Archie Panjabi and Paul Kaye, the story unfolds over the course of a single night in a hospital where an understaffed ward, a stream of emergencies and difficult personal histories push one nurse towards breaking point.
Panjabi, known for Hijack, Doctor Who and Under the Bridge, stars as Riya, an overworked nurse struggling to keep her professional composure as the demands of the night mount. Exhaustion and guilt weigh heavily on her, while memories of past mistakes continue to haunt her.
As patients deteriorate and emergencies arrive, Riya must navigate a healthcare system under immense strain. The night becomes even more difficult when a medical error nearly costs a life, forcing her to confront the consequences of what has happened.

Riya’s shift takes a volatile turn with the arrival of Fred, played by Paul Kaye. The combative amputee becomes one of the night’s most challenging presences, adding to the pressure on a nurse already stretched to her limits.
Kaye, whose credits include Small Prophets, The Woman in Cabin 10 and The Hack, stars opposite Panjabi in a drama that explores the emotional toll of caring for others when the system itself is struggling.
Away from the ward, Riya is also carrying personal burdens. The growing distance between her and her teenage daughter adds another layer to her distress, leaving her caught between her responsibilities at work and the family life that is slipping further away.
As the hours pass, Riya’s carefully maintained composure begins to fracture. The combination of exhaustion, guilt and mounting emergencies forces her into a reckoning with compassion, burnout and the mistakes she cannot leave behind.
A drama about the people holding the NHS together
The Quiet Hour explores the pressures faced by healthcare workers while focusing on the individuals behind the hospital’s daily demands. Through Riya’s increasingly difficult shift, the drama examines what happens when the need to care for others collides with human exhaustion and an overstretched service.
Its single-night setting keeps the focus on the immediate challenges facing the ward, as staff attempt to respond to emergencies while continuing to care for vulnerable patients.
At its heart is the quiet heroism of those who keep going despite the emotional and practical demands of their work. For Riya, however, the question is how much one person can endure before the pressure becomes too much.
