Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer star in the acclaimed romantic political drama Fellow Travelers, which makes its British television appearance on Channel 4 tonight with a double-bill beginning at 10pm.
Spanning four decades of American history, the stylish drama follows two men whose passionate relationship unfolds against a backdrop of political persecution, social upheaval and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. From the paranoia of McCarthyism in the 1950s to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, their love affair comes at a time when being discovered could cost them everything.
Episode One – 10pm
Set in 1950s Washington, the opening episode introduces Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer), a decorated Second World War veteran building a promising political career at the State Department. Ambitious and ruthless, Hawk knows how to navigate the corridors of power. In public, he flirts with women to protect his reputation, while privately pursuing relationships with men and carefully avoiding emotional attachments.
That carefully controlled existence is thrown into turmoil when he meets Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a deeply religious and idealistic young man whose beliefs and outlook are very different from his own. Despite their differences, the pair are drawn into an intense and passionate relationship that places both their careers and their personal safety at risk.
Their story reaches across some of the most turbulent periods in modern American history, including the Vietnam War, the hedonistic disco era of the 1970s and the devastating AIDS epidemic.
The episode also jumps forward to 1986, when Hawk is married and appears to have settled into a conventional heterosexual life. However, the arrival of a mysterious package prompts him to reconsider the past and sets him on a mission to see Tim again.
Episode Two – 11.25pm
The danger surrounding Hawk and Tim intensifies as the State Department launches investigations into suspected homosexuals. Fearing that his own secret life could be exposed, Hawk begins distancing himself from Tim in a desperate attempt to avoid scrutiny. His colleague Mary is also caught up in the investigation, bringing the threat closer to home.
Meanwhile, Tim begins to question his faith as the pressure of their circumstances grows.
In 1980s San Francisco, Hawk witnesses the devastating reality of the AIDS crisis and becomes increasingly desperate to reconnect with Tim. But his attempts to reach him are complicated when Tim’s sister stands in his way.
Across both episodes, Fellow Travelers explores the personal cost of living under prejudice and the difficult choices faced by people forced to hide who they are. At its heart is a relationship that endures across decades, even as politics, society and the lives of the two men change around it.
Starring Bailey and Bomer, the drama combines political intrigue with an emotionally charged love story, examining how fear and discrimination shape private lives as well as public history.
Fellow Travelers begins tonight on Channel 4 at 10pm, with the second episode following at 11.25pm. The series concludes on Thursday.
