The Celebrity Traitors favorites Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan are back for another round of outrageous challenges as Rob & Romesh Vs returns to Sky One tonight, Wednesday 14 October, at 9pm.
The BAFTA-winning comedy double act kick off the new series with an adventure into the world of kung fu, travelling to Hong Kong and mainland China to discover whether they have what it takes to master one of the world’s most demanding martial arts.
Their first stop is Hong Kong, where the pair get the chance to learn from martial arts movie star Jet Li. The action legend helps introduce them to the spectacular art of wire fu, the cinematic technique that uses wires and harnesses to create gravity-defying martial arts sequences.
For Rob and Romesh, however, watching the professionals and attempting the moves themselves are two very different things. As they embark on their latest challenge, the pair must get to grips with the techniques, discipline and physical demands behind the seemingly effortless action seen on screen.
The adventure then takes them into mainland China to the Shaolin Monastery, widely recognised as a historic centre of kung fu. There, the comedians discover what it takes to become a lay disciple, immersing themselves in the traditions and training associated with the legendary Shaolin monks.
Their journey culminates in an ambitious performance in the Shaolin Zen Music Ritual, giving the duo the chance to put their lessons to the test in front of an audience. Whether they can do justice to the spectacle remains to be seen, but the challenge promises plenty of opportunities for the pair’s familiar combination of determination, awkwardness and comic bickering.
The new series sees Rob and Romesh continue their tradition of throwing themselves into unfamiliar worlds, meeting extraordinary people and attempting challenges that are often far beyond their comfort zones. From elite sporting disciplines to unusual cultural experiences, the format thrives on the contrast between the duo’s ambitions and the reality of what they are being asked to do.
Kung fu is just the beginning of their latest run of adventures. Upcoming episodes will see them tackle the Tour de France, taking on the iconic final stage in Paris alongside their podcast partners Josh Widdicombe and Tom Davis, with sprint cycling legend Sir Mark Cavendish involved in a five-kilometre showdown.
A Halloween special will take the pair to New Orleans to explore the supernatural, where they investigate ghost stories, encounter people who describe themselves as vampires and consult a trance channeler. Elsewhere, they head to the United States to learn about competitive ten-pin bowling, meeting members of the Troup bowling dynasty before taking part in a team competition.
The return of Rob & Romesh Vs also comes during a busy period for the comedy duo. They are due to appear in the new celebrity edition of The Traitors, joining a star-studded line-up at the castle for the BBC One series hosted by Claudia Winkleman. There, their comic partnership will face a very different test as contestants attempt to survive suspicion, secret alliances and the threat of banishment.
First, though, their attention turns to China, where martial arts history and spectacular performance provide the backdrop for their latest challenge.
Can Rob and Romesh master wire fu and make it through their Shaolin training to take part in the Zen Music Ritual?
