Spider-Man Web-Slingers Into History with Record-Breaking $72 Million Preview Run

The new Spider-Man movie has smashed box office records, delivering the highest preview haul in North American cinema history.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially rewritten box office history, delivering the highest preview haul in North American cinema history.

The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment pulled in an eye-popping $72 million during preview screenings, which included early access viewings on Wednesday along with traditional Thursday evening shows.

The remarkable total edges out the previous standard-bearer, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which collected $60 million from Thursday night previews.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the fourth solo outing for Tom Holland’s web-slinger sees Peter Parker navigating a street-level crisis in New York City while coming to terms with evolving powers. The star-studded ensemble cast features Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Tramell Tillman, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo.

While securing the preview crown marks a massive achievement, industry metrics suggest the film may take a different trajectory over its full opening stretch. Avengers: Endgame famously went on to shatter total opening weekend records with $357 million domestically and $1.2 billion globally. Sony Pictures currently projects Brand New Day to bring in $190 million to $195 million domestically over the weekend, alongside an estimated $275 million to $300 million internationally.

If those estimates hold, the film will likely fall slightly shy of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which generated $260 million domestically and $587 million worldwide in December 2021. However, the historic preview performance signals incredible momentum for the Sony and Marvel Studios co-production as it swings through its debut weekend.
