Marvel fans can now stream VisionQuest, the new original series starring Paul Bettany, exclusively on Disney+. Available from today, Wednesday 14 October, the series continues the story of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most intriguing characters, exploring what happens when an artificial being begins searching for his own identity and purpose.
The show forms the final instalment of a television trilogy that began with the award-winning WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. While each series has explored a different corner of Marvel’s supernatural and technological world, VisionQuest turns the spotlight back on Vision as he attempts to make sense of his existence after everything that has happened to him.
What is VisionQuest about?
Following his reboot, Vision is living in hiding after escaping those who wanted to turn him into a weapon. Although he has regained his freedom, he is still searching for answers about who he is and what his life should mean.
To help him make sense of his existence, Vision turns to the artificial intelligence personas embedded within his programming. These include F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H. and J.A.R.V.I.S., alongside the formidable Ultron — a presence whose influence could prove particularly dangerous.
Vision’s quiet existence is shattered when a bounty is placed on his head, forcing him to go on the run. He is joined by Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious young boy who may be connected to Vision in a far more personal way than he first realises.
As the pair evade those pursuing them, Vision must confront his own nature, resist Ultron’s influence and discover the truth about Thomas. Their journey promises to raise questions about identity, memory, family and what it really means to be human.
With danger closing in, Vision’s search for a new beginning becomes a fight for survival.
Paul Bettany returns alongside James Spader
Paul Bettany reprises his role as Vision, continuing a character journey that has been central to some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most emotionally complex stories. Once defined by his origins as an artificial being, Vision now faces the challenge of deciding who he wants to become.
James Spader also returns as Ultron, bringing back the character whose presence threatens to complicate Vision’s attempts to establish an independent identity.
The supporting cast includes Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer, with Emily Hampshire and James D’Arcy also starring.
The combination of returning Marvel characters and new faces expands the world surrounding Vision, while Thomas Shepherd’s mysterious connection to the central character provides another question for the series to explore.
The creative team behind the Marvel series
VisionQuest is created for television by Terry Matalas, based on Marvel Comics. Matalas also serves as a writer and executive producer, working alongside writers Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti and Matthew Okumura.
The directing team includes Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali and Matalas.
Executive producers include Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Paul Bettany, Mary Livanos, Terry Matalas, Jac Schaeffer and Christopher J. Byrne. Roopesh Parekh serves as producer.
The series follows the creative legacy of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, bringing another perspective to a connected story that has explored grief, identity, power and the consequences of extraordinary abilities.
How does VisionQuest connect to WandaVision and Agatha All Along?
For viewers who have followed the previous two series, VisionQuest represents another chapter in a story that has gradually expanded beyond Wanda Maximoff and her experiences.
WandaVision introduced audiences to an unconventional television-inspired world in which Wanda’s grief and extraordinary powers reshaped reality. Agatha All Along subsequently explored the mysteries surrounding Agatha Harkness, adding further supernatural depth to the wider narrative.
Now, VisionQuest shifts the focus to Vision and the question of what remains when a being created through technology begins to seek his own answers.
The series also brings Ultron back into the picture, setting up a conflict that is as much about Vision’s internal struggle as it is about the external forces pursuing him. With Thomas Shepherd at his side, Vision must work out whether his companion holds the key to understanding his past — or represents another mystery that could put them both in danger.
