The Celebrity Traitors has continued its record-breaking ratings run, with an overnight audience of 8.5 million viewers tuning in for the second episode on BBC One on Friday night.
The figure represents a huge 55.5% share of everyone watching television at the time, meaning more than half of the UK’s TV audience was watching Claudia Winkleman’s celebrity murder-mystery unfold. The episode also peaked at 8.6 million viewers.
It comes just 24 hours after the second series launched with an extraordinary 8.9 million viewers, giving The Celebrity Traitors the biggest opening episode of any series in the Traitors franchise. The premiere attracted a 54.9% audience share and peaked at 9.1 million.
The ratings underline just how quickly Celebrity Traitors has become one of the UK’s biggest television events.
And there is still plenty more to come.
This article contains Traitors spoilers.
Celebrity Traitors is beating Britain’s biggest entertainment shows
The scale of The Celebrity Traitors’ audience becomes clearer when it is compared with some of Britain’s other biggest entertainment programmes.
The latest Strictly Come Dancing live show, which aired on BBC One on Saturday September 26, attracted an average audience of 4.8 million viewers, with a peak of 5 million. That was down on the equivalent 2025 live show, which averaged 6.2 million.
Meanwhile, the latest series of The Great British Bake Off launched on Channel 4 with 3.4 million viewers on September 22, as Nigella Lawson made her debut as a judge alongside Paul Hollywood.
And the most recent series of Britain’s Got Talent concluded in May with a 7-day consolidated audience of 4.37 million for its live final.
The figures aren’t perfectly like-for-like — Celebrity Traitors’ 8.5 million is an overnight figure, while the BGT final figure includes seven days of viewing — but they demonstrate the size of the audience currently gathering around the BBC’s reality hit.
The BBC’s own Traitors franchise has already produced some of the biggest television audiences of the year. BARB’s all-time programme data shows the 2025 Celebrity Traitors finale ultimately reached 14.94 million viewers across four screens, while the 2025 Strictly final reached 8.49 million.
2.9 million watched Uncloaked
The huge audience didn’t disappear when the main programme ended.
A further 2.9 million viewers stayed on for The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked, the companion programme presented by Ed Gamble.
Uncloaked gives eliminated and murdered contestants their first opportunity to discover who was secretly working against them, making it an increasingly important part of the Traitors viewing experience.
The BBC has confirmed that the second episode of Uncloaked features the players discovering the identities of the Traitors who had been deceiving them.
With 2.9 million viewers watching, the spin-off is itself attracting an audience that many established entertainment programmes would be delighted to have for their main broadcasts.
Who are the three Celebrity Traitors?
There are now three Traitors inside the castle.
The first two were revealed during Thursday night’s launch when Claudia Winkleman selected Richard E Grant and Maya Jama.
Grant immediately caused chaos by appearing to accidentally reveal his status to other contestants.
During a conversation with Joe Lycett, he openly answered that he was a Traitor when asked whether he was a Faithful or Traitor.
The extraordinary admission quickly became one of the defining moments of the opening episode, although some of the other contestants struggled to believe that Grant would genuinely give away such an important secret.
But Grant survived.
And he now has another problem: his fellow contestants are beginning to suspect him.
James Acaster becomes the third Traitor
The second episode delivered the first major twist of the series.
Richard and Maya were given the opportunity to choose between Amol Rajan and James Acaster, with one celebrity to be recruited as a Traitor and the other to be murdered.
The Traitors chose to recruit Acaster.
That means the current Traitor team is:
- Richard E Grant
- Maya Jama
- James Acaster
Acaster was visibly uncomfortable about joining the dark side, but accepted the role because refusing would have meant being murdered.
He now faces the difficult task of protecting the other Traitors while simultaneously avoiding suspicion himself.
Amol Rajan is the first celebrity out
The first celebrity casualty of the series was Amol Rajan.
After being selected alongside Acaster as a potential recruit, Rajan was murdered by the Traitors and became the first contestant eliminated from the game.
Rajan subsequently acknowledged that he had perhaps made himself too visible during the opening stages of the competition.
His exit leaves the Faithfuls with a major problem: they have lost one of the contestants who was actively trying to work out what was happening inside the castle, while the Traitors have successfully added another member to their team.
Richard E Grant is already in serious danger
The biggest question heading into the next episode is whether Richard E Grant can survive.
His extraordinary decision to tell people he was a Traitor should have made him an obvious target, but the actor has managed to remain in the game.
By the end of Friday’s episode, however, suspicion was mounting.
Julie Hesmondhalgh and Joe Lycett were among those questioning Grant, with the Round Table becoming increasingly focused on whether his bizarre confession was genuine or part of an elaborate attempt to make the Faithfuls think he couldn’t possibly be a Traitor.
The episode ended before viewers saw the result of the Round Table vote, leaving Grant’s fate hanging in the balance.
Why Celebrity Traitors is such a ratings phenomenon
The show’s success is particularly striking because live television audiences have been declining for years, particularly among younger viewers.
Yet Celebrity Traitors is managing to turn the programme into a genuine appointment-to-view event.
The opening episode attracted an extraordinary 83.5% share among 16-34-year-olds, according to Digital i data reported by The Guardian, with an average audience of 1.6 million in that demographic.
That suggests the show’s enormous audience isn’t simply being driven by older traditional television viewers.
The combination of famous contestants, social-media-friendly moments, murder mysteries and the ability to speculate about the Traitors between episodes has created exactly the kind of programme capable of generating a national conversation.
And this year’s cast has given viewers plenty to talk about already.
Richard E Grant’s extraordinary blunder, Ross Kemp’s paranoia, Maya Jama’s secret role and James Acaster’s reluctant recruitment have provided several major talking points in just two episodes.
The Celebrity Traitors could break its own records
The first series of Celebrity Traitors already ended with enormous numbers.
Its 2025 finale reached a 14.94 million four-screen audience, according to BARB, making it the most-watched programme in the organisation’s current top historical listings.
The second series has now started from an even higher base.
An 8.9 million launch followed by 8.5 million for episode two means the show has maintained almost all of its enormous opening-night audience.
There are still several weeks of betrayals, murders, Round Tables and twists to come.
When is the next episode of The Celebrity Traitors on?
Well, that’s the bad news… you have to wait until THURSDAY for the series to continue!
A Finale that could break records
If the audience continues at anything close to its current level, the Celebrity Traitors finale has a very real opportunity to become one of the biggest entertainment television events of the year.
For now, though, the message from the ratings is clear: Britain is watching the castle.
