Marble Hall Murders returns to BBC One tonight (Saturday, October 3) with Episode 2, as Susan Ryeland finds herself increasingly drawn into a mystery that reaches far beyond the pages of a detective novel.
Where to Watch: The second episode of the six-part mystery drama airs on BBC One at 9.35pm tonight, with the episode also available to watch now on BBC iPlayer. The episode runs for around 49 minutes.
For viewers who enjoyed the opening episode, there is plenty more to unravel as Anthony Horowitz’s elaborate mystery continues to switch between Susan’s present-day investigation and the fictional world of Atticus Pünd.
What happens in Marble Hall Murders Episode 2?
Episode 2 sees Susan Ryeland, played by Lesley Manville, impressed by Eliot Crace’s work on the new Atticus Pünd story.
Within Eliot’s novel, the celebrated fictional detective is investigating the mysterious death of Lady Margaret Chalfont, with the action taking place in Corfu.
But Susan has another, much more personal mystery to contend with.
Eliot is convinced that his grandmother, Miriam Crace, was murdered. The problem for Susan is that Miriam was a hugely successful and publicly adored author, making Eliot’s claim difficult to accept.
As Susan begins to take his suspicions more seriously, the boundary between the mystery Eliot is writing and the mystery unfolding around his own family becomes increasingly blurred.
The official Episode 2 synopsis confirms that Susan is sidetracked by Eliot’s conviction that his grandmother was murdered, while Atticus Pünd continues his investigation into Lady Margaret Chalfont’s death.

The mystery inside the mystery
One of the most intriguing aspects of Marble Hall Murders is the way it tells two stories at once.
Susan is editing Eliot’s new Atticus Pünd novel, in which the fictional detective is investigating a death in 1950s Corfu. At the same time, Susan is being pulled towards a real-life mystery involving Eliot and his family.
That structure is familiar territory for Anthony Horowitz, whose Susan Ryeland books deliberately play with the relationship between a detective story and the world surrounding the person writing it.
Episode 2 pushes that idea further. As Atticus Pünd questions the Chalfont family, Susan is confronted with Eliot’s extraordinary allegation about his grandmother. The two investigations may appear separate, but the series is built around the possibility that clues in one world could illuminate the other.
What is Marble Hall Murders about?
Marble Hall Murders is the television adaptation of the third and final novel in Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland series, published in 2025.
The story brings Susan back into the publishing world when she is asked to work on a continuation of the Atticus Pünd detective series. The new book is being written by Eliot Crace, the troubled grandson of celebrated author Miriam Crace.
Inside the novel, Atticus Pünd travels to Corfu and becomes involved in the murder of Lady Margaret Chalfont, working alongside Greek detective Achilles Vassilikos.
Meanwhile, Susan’s work on the manuscript begins to expose secrets in Eliot’s own family. Before long, the fictional murder and the real-world mystery become impossible to keep completely apart.
The television series is the latest instalment following Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders, with Manville and McMullan returning as Susan Ryeland and Atticus Pünd.
Is Marble Hall Murders worth watching tonight?
For viewers who like traditional murder mysteries with an added literary twist, Episode 2 is likely to be an important instalment in the six-part story.
There are essentially two questions driving the episode: who killed Lady Margaret Chalfont, and is Eliot right that his grandmother Miriam was murdered?
The series is deliberately constructed to make those questions overlap, leaving viewers to work out which clues matter and which might be designed to send them down the wrong path.
