Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is set to be a major festive attraction for Sky Cinema, with the beloved Aardman character returning for a brand-new adventure alongside two other big-screen releases.
Shaun the Sheep is back with a monstrously entertaining new adventure, as Sky Cinema prepares to make the mischievous sheep one of the stars of its 2026 Christmas film offering.
Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is tipped to lead Sky Cinema’s festive highlights alongside Minions and Monsters and Disclosure, bringing together family-friendly animation, comedy and science-fiction spectacle for viewers over the Christmas period.
The new Shaun the Sheep film marks an exciting partnership between Sky and multi-award-winning British animation studio Aardman, with Sky securing exclusive UK distribution rights to the third stop-motion animated feature in the globally popular franchise.
Although Shaun is no stranger to the big screen, the latest adventure promises a fresh twist on the familiar farmyard comedy, bringing Halloween scares, mad science and a mysterious creature to Mossy Bottom.
Shaun the Sheep gets a beastly new adventure
Shaun and the flock are preparing for Halloween when disaster strikes at Mossy Bottom Farm. The clumsy Farmer accidentally destroys their beloved pumpkin patch, prompting Shaun to take matters into his own hooves.
Determined to put things right, Shaun turns mad scientist in an attempt to fix the problem. But, as anyone familiar with his adventures might expect, the plan quickly spirals out of control.
With the Farmer missing and a wild beast roaming the woods around Mossingham, the stage is set for a spooky family adventure packed with slapstick comedy, surprises and the Flock’s trademark antics.
The film is produced by Aardman, with Sky acting as its exclusive UK distributor and STUDIOCANAL serving as its global partner outside the UK. It’s still playing in many cinemas, having been released in the Summer.
For Sky Cinema, the release represents a significant addition to its original film slate, bringing one of Britain’s best-loved animated properties to audiences during the competitive festive television season.
Andrew Orr, Executive Producer and Head of Originals for Sky Cinema said: “Shaun is a household name, so it’s huge news for us to be welcoming him and the flock to our 2026 Sky Original film slate. It’s an honour to work with Aardman at such an exciting time for the studio, with a film that we know fans of all ages will love. Expect laughs, spookiness and some brilliantly entertaining new characters.”
Sarah Cox, Chief Creative Director at Aardman said: “Shaun the Sheep is an iconic character, beloved by viewers of all ages around the world. In our new animated movie, we bring family-friendly thrills to this light-hearted, spooky Halloween adventure. Expect smashed pumpkins, wayward science, and a wild hairy beast on the loose in Mossy Bottom – all delivered with the Flock’s trademark joyous comedy.”
Shaun’s box-office success sets the stage for another hit
The new film arrives at an exciting time for Aardman, which has enjoyed decades of success with its distinctive stop-motion animation and internationally recognised characters.
Shaun first appeared in the 1995 Wallace & Gromit short A Close Shave, before becoming the star of his own television series and eventually making the leap to cinema.
The original Shaun the Sheep Movie, released in 2015, proved a major international success, earning approximately $110 million worldwide at the box office. The film was nominated for a BAFTA and an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, helping establish Shaun as a genuine movie star.
Its 2019 follow-up, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, took the flock into outer space for an adventure involving an alien visitor. The sequel earned approximately $48 million worldwide and received further BAFTA and Academy Award nominations, while earning widespread praise from critics.
The franchise has continued to reach audiences beyond cinemas, with the television series broadcast in 170 territories worldwide. In 2021, Aardman released the half-hour special Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas, which went on to win an International Emmy.
The latest instalment brings another seasonal hook to the franchise, with its Halloween setting offering a mixture of spooky thrills and family-friendly comedy that could make it an appealing choice for viewers of all ages.
Aardman’s Wallace & Gromit success adds to the excitement
Shaun’s return also follows the enormous success of another of Aardman’s most famous creations, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
Released over the Christmas period, the film broke viewing records to become the most-watched animated film broadcast on British television since modern viewing records began in 2002.
It subsequently won two BAFTAs, for Best Animation and Best Children’s and Family Film, and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
The success further demonstrated the enduring popularity of Aardman’s characters, particularly during the festive season, when family audiences turn to familiar favourites.
For Sky Cinema, bringing Shaun back for a new original feature is a continuation of its longstanding relationship with the studio. Sky’s work with Aardman includes Morph, the first Sky Kids Original commission in 2016, alongside other children’s programming and projects.
The new Shaun film is therefore more than another addition to the Christmas schedule: it represents a partnership between two established British entertainment brands, with a character that has already proved his appeal across generations.
Minions and Monsters brings another box-office heavyweight
Shaun will not be the only animated favourite entertaining audiences, with Minions & Monsters also featuring among the films expected to attract viewers.
The latest instalment in Illumination’s hugely successful Minions franchise follows the mischievous yellow characters as they set out to find monsters for a Hollywood film, only for their plans to unleash chaos.
The Minions have become one of the most recognisable properties in modern animation, with previous films generating billions of dollars across the wider Despicable Me franchise.
The original Minions film, released in 2015, earned approximately $1.16 billion worldwide, while Minions: The Rise of Gru brought in around $940 million globally in 2022.
That established commercial success provides a strong backdrop for the latest adventure, with the characters’ broad international appeal making them a natural fit for a family-focused festive line-up.
Like Shaun, the Minions rely heavily on visual comedy, exaggerated personalities and chaotic adventures, giving viewers another option for animated entertainment over Christmas.
Disclosure adds a different flavour to the festive line-up
Completing the trio is Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction thriller exploring the possibility of humanity discovering that it is not alone in the universe.
The film stars Emily Blunt alongside Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth, bringing a more suspenseful and thought-provoking option to the selection.
Spielberg has a long history of successful science-fiction films, including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds. His latest project continues his interest in humanity’s relationship with the unknown, offering a very different viewing experience from Shaun’s farmyard antics.
The wider commercial success of Spielberg’s films demonstrates the enduring appeal of science-fiction on the big screen, while the combination of an established director and recognisable cast gives Disclosure Day a strong profile among the releases available to audiences.
Together, the three titles offer a varied selection for Sky Cinema subscribers, from stop-motion comedy and animated mayhem to big-screen science fiction.
Shaun the Sheep remains the heart of Sky’s Christmas offering
For Sky, the appeal of The Beast of Mossy Bottom goes beyond its cinema credentials. Shaun is a globally recognised character whose largely wordless comedy makes the series accessible to viewers of different ages and nationalities.
The franchise’s history, awards recognition and international reach have helped make Shaun one of Aardman’s most successful properties. The new film also arrives as the character marks more than 30 years since his first appearance in A Close Shave.
The film’s Halloween-themed story, familiar characters and proven history of attracting audiences make it a strong contender to become one of the standout family choices over Christmas 2026.
And with Minions & Monsters offering more animated laughs and Disclosure Day providing a science-fiction alternative, Sky Cinema’s festive selection promises something for viewers looking for comedy, adventure or a little bit of both.
For Shaun fans, however, the biggest attraction will undoubtedly be seeing the flock back together for another chaotic adventure at Mossy Bottom Farm — and discovering what happens when one sheep’s scientific ambitions unleash a beast on the loose.
Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, Minions & Monsters and Disclosure are among the films set to feature in Sky Cinema’s 2026 offering available on Sky TV and NOW – however Sky TV has not confirmed this. Viewers should check Sky’s official listings for confirmed Christmas broadcast dates and availability.
