Helen and Sam are back, but their latest mission could be their most dangerous yet. Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw reunite for a second series of Netflix’s darkly comic spy thriller Black Doves, with a host of new faces joining the action as old loyalties are put to the test.
BLACK DOVES SEASON 2 ARRIVES ON NETFLIX ON NOVEMBER 5
There is no such thing as a quiet life for Helen Webb, particularly when your job involves stealing government secrets and passing them on to a shadowy espionage organisation.
After surviving the explosive events of the first series, Helen (Keira Knightley) and her unlikely ally Sam (Ben Whishaw) are preparing to return for another round of deadly intrigue in Black Doves Season 2.
And if fans thought the pair might finally get some time to themselves, they are in for a surprise.
The hit spy thriller is back on Netflix on November 5, bringing with it more double-crossing, dangerous assignments and the deliciously dark humour that helped make its first outing such an entertaining watch.
When viewers last saw Helen, her carefully constructed double life had been thrown into turmoil. By day, she was the seemingly devoted wife of politician Wallace (Andrew Buchan), but behind closed doors she was secretly working for the Black Doves, an organisation trading in political secrets and intelligence.
Now, with Wallace preparing to become prime minister, Helen has even more to lose. Her position is increasingly precarious, and the consequences of being exposed could extend far beyond her own carefully guarded secrets.
Meanwhile, her mysterious handler, Mrs Reed (Sarah Lancashire), finds herself caught up in a ruthless scheme designed to undermine her standing within the Black Doves.
With the organisation’s internal politics becoming increasingly dangerous, Helen is reunited with Sam, a former high-end assassin whose own career has taken a rather unfortunate turn.
Having once been one of the most effective killers in the business, Sam is now reduced to lonely evenings drinking in Soho bars and accepting less glamorous, low-paying assignments.
But his fortunes could be about to change when Patrick (Sam Riley), an emissary from a mysterious organisation, arrives offering him a potential lifeline.
As Helen and Sam begin searching for answers, they find themselves drawn into a much bigger conspiracy, where trust is in short supply and even the people closest to them could have ulterior motives.
Their latest mission will take them back to familiar faces and old enemies, forcing both to confront the decisions and sacrifices that have shaped their pasts.
And with the people they love increasingly caught in the crossfire, the stakes have never been higher.
Who’s joining Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw in Black Doves Season 2?
The returning cast will be welcome news for fans, with Knightley and Whishaw once again leading the action as Helen and Sam.
Sarah Lancashire also returns as the formidable Mrs Reed, alongside Andrew Buchan as Wallace.
Other familiar faces making a comeback include Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines, Ella Lily Hyland as Williams, Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor, Agnes O’Casey as Dani and Molly Chesworth as Marie.
However, Season 2 is also bringing some impressive new talent into the world of espionage.
One Day star Ambika Mod joins as Laila, an unpredictable and sharp-tongued Black Doves agent sent to assist Helen on a mission.
Babou Ceesay, recently seen in Alien: Earth, plays Mr Conteh, a Black Doves executive whose motives are far from reassuring.
Sam Riley, known for Firebrand, takes on the role of Patrick, the mysterious emissary who offers Sam an opportunity to get his life back on track.
Also joining the cast are Scream and The Lincoln Lawyer star Neve Campbell as Cecile Mason, Blade Runner 2049 actress Sylvia Hoeks as Katia Chernov, Goran Kostic as Alexi Chernov and Samuel Barnett as Jerry.
With fresh faces, shifting alliances and plenty of unfinished business, the new series looks set to expand the dangerous world of the Black Doves considerably.
The combination of high-stakes espionage, complicated relationships and sharp comedy remains at the heart of the show, but Helen and Sam may discover that the biggest threat comes not from their enemies, but from the organisation they have both come to depend on.
Can Helen protect her family while continuing to serve the Black Doves? And will Sam find a way back to his former life before his past catches up with him?
One thing is : their troubles are far from over.
Black Doves Season 2 premieres on Netflix on November 5. The first season is available to stream now.
