The Great British Bake Off 2026 Week 3 theme: Audience Choice Week
The Great British Bake Off is putting viewers in charge for the first time, with Audience Choice Week arriving in the tent next week.
The new twist will see the bakers take on challenges inspired by ideas submitted by Bake Off fans, marking the first Audience Choice Week in the show’s history.
Series 17 continues with Nigella Lawson joining returning judge Paul Hollywood, while Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond remain behind the scenes – and the latest episode promises to put a very different spin on the familiar Signature, Technical and Showstopper format.
Audience Choice Week airs on Tuesday, October 6 at 8pm on Channel 4, with the episode also available through Channel 4’s streaming service.
So, what exactly is Audience Choice Week and how did viewers help shape the episode?
What is Audience Choice Week on The Great British Bake Off?
Audience Choice Week is a brand-new Bake Off format in which viewers were invited to submit ideas for Signature, Technical and Showstopper challenges.
The idea was announced ahead of the new series, giving fans the opportunity to suggest the kind of bakes they wanted to see the contestants tackle.
The Bake Off team then went through the submissions before selecting ideas to be developed for the programme. The official terms made clear that suggestions would be chosen and adapted at the discretion of the production team and judges.
That means Audience Choice Week isn’t quite a live vote where viewers decide what the bakers make on the night. Instead, fans supplied the ideas, with the Bake Off team and judges deciding which concepts could be turned into workable television challenges.
How did viewers choose the Bake Off challenges?
Earlier this year, viewers were invited to send in ideas for any of the three traditional Bake Off challenges: Signature, Technical or Showstopper.
Fans could submit ideas for one, two or all three challenges, with the submission process closing in January. The show specifically described the opportunity as a chance for viewers to see their ideas potentially brought to life in the famous Bake Off tent.
There was no cash prize or competition for people submitting suggestions. Instead, the prize was the possibility of seeing an idea make it onto the programme.
The production team warned that submissions could be similar to ideas already being considered, while selected challenges could also be changed before filming.
What are the Audience Choice Week challenges?
The episode will feature three very different challenges, with viewers’ ideas taking the bakers well outside some of the show’s usual formats.
Signature challenge: Bake with a relative
For the Signature, familiar faces will enter the tent, with the bakers joined by members of their own families.
The challenge sees the bakers work alongside their relatives, bringing a very different dynamic to the competition.
Rather than simply relying on their own baking skills, the contestants will have to work as a team while attempting to impress Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson.
The challenge selected for the episode is a cheesecake Signature, with the bakers’ loved ones joining them in the tent.
It’s a significant departure from a standard Signature challenge, where contestants normally have to showcase their own style and creativity.
Technical challenge: Mystery box
The iconic Bake Off gingham cloth gets a temporary replacement during the Technical.
Instead, the bakers will face a mystery box, giving them an unfamiliar level of choice as they attempt to work out what to make.
The mystery-box format could prove particularly difficult because having more options doesn’t necessarily make the decision easier.
With the contestants already under pressure from the clock, they will have to decide how best to use what they have available before Paul and Nigella judge the results.
Showstopper challenge: Wearable bakes
The Showstopper is arguably the most unusual challenge of the week.
The bakers will have to unleash their inner fashion designers by creating wearable bakes.
That means the contestants aren’t simply being asked to make something that looks spectacular on a cake stand. Their creations need to have a fashion element too.
The challenge promises everything from ambitious designs to potential baking disasters, as the contestants attempt to turn their edible creations into something resembling wearable fashion.
The programme has even used mannequins to display the creations rather than having contestants literally eat from one another, according to comments from the Bake Off team.
Is Audience Choice Week the first time Bake Off viewers have chosen challenges?
Yes.
The official Great British Bake Off website describes Series 17 as featuring the show’s first ever Audience Choice Week.
The concept gives viewers a more direct connection to the challenges in the tent, although the final decisions remain with the production team and judges.
It also means the audience isn’t simply watching the competition unfold – some of the ideas being brought to the tent originated with Bake Off fans themselves.
Who are the judges on Bake Off Audience Choice Week?
Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson will judge Audience Choice Week.
Nigella is joining the show for Series 17, replacing Prue Leith as Paul Hollywood’s fellow judge.
The new judging line-up is joined by presenters Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding, who continue to guide the bakers through the competition.
Audience Choice Week is the third episode of the new series, following Cake Week and Biscuit Week. The episode is listed as Series 17, Episode 3, airing on October 6.
When is The Great British Bake Off Audience Choice Week?
The Great British Bake Off Audience Choice Week airs Tuesday, October 6 at 8pm on Channel 4.
The episode runs for 90 minutes, with a repeat airing later in the evening and the programme available to watch through Channel 4’s streaming service.
What else happens in Audience Choice Week?
The episode promises to maintain the familiar Bake Off structure of Signature, Technical and Showstopper, but with the audience-inspired challenges giving each round a significant twist.
The bakers will have to work with relatives, make decisions from a mystery box and then create elaborate wearable bakes.
That makes Audience Choice Week one of the more experimental episodes of the new series – and it could reveal whether Bake Off fans are capable of coming up with challenges that are as difficult as those traditionally devised by the show’s team.
With Nigella Lawson now sitting alongside Paul Hollywood in the judging tent, viewers will also get another chance to see the new judging partnership in action.
