The pressure is on in the MasterChef kitchen as MasterChef: The Professionals returns to BBC One tonight (Tuesday) at 8pm with the first of 21 brand-new episodes, and a fresh look for the much-loved culinary competition. Available to stream now on BBC iPlayer, the new series marks a significant change for the programme, with Matt Tebbutt no longer at the helm. Instead, the focus is firmly on the chefs, as renowned judges Monica Galetti and Marcus Wareing begin their search for the next champion.
And there is little time for anyone to settle in, as six ambitious professional chefs arrive ready to prove they have the talent, technical ability and creativity to make their mark. With two demanding challenges standing between them and a place in the next round, the contestants will need to demonstrate everything they have learned in their professional kitchens. But with Monica and Marcus watching their every move, even the smallest mistake could prove costly.
First up, the famous skills test makes its return, although this time there is a significant twist. Rather than tackling the challenge individually, the six chefs discover they will be competing side by side in the studio, adding an extra layer of intensity to an already daunting test. With everyone working on the same dish at the same time, there will be nowhere to hide, and every chop, slice and sauté will be open to scrutiny from both the judges and their fellow competitors.
Monica has certainly not made things easy for the newcomers, setting them the challenge of recreating an intricate crab raviolo dish accompanied by a rich, deeply flavoured bisque. It is a test that demands patience, precision and a real understanding of flavour, with several technical elements that could easily trip up even an experienced chef.
The first hurdle is preparing the crab itself, with the contestants needing to crack open the shell carefully and extract the delicate meat without allowing any unwanted shards to find their way into the finished dish. Then comes the bisque, where they must extract every last bit of flavour from the crab to create a sauce with the depth and richness worthy of a restaurant-quality plate.
However, while some chefs appear more comfortable with the demands of the dish, others quickly find themselves outside their comfort zone. For one contestant, making a bisque is a technique they have never attempted before, while another begins to struggle with the consistency of their pasta. As the pressure mounts and precious minutes tick away, keeping a cool head becomes just as important as possessing the necessary culinary skills.
With the chefs working shoulder to shoulder, there is also the added distraction of seeing how everyone else is progressing. The temptation to look across at a rival’s work could prove difficult to resist, particularly when doubts begin to creep in about their own creations. And as tensions and emotions run high, the question is whether they can pull everything together in time to deliver the kind of polished, technically accomplished dish Monica expects.
Once the skills test is over, there is no opportunity to relax, as all six contestants return to the kitchen for their second and final challenge of the episode: preparing a signature dish.
This is their chance to step away from Monica’s exacting instructions and show the judges what they are really capable of. Each chef must create a plate that reflects their individual culinary identity, drawing on their experience, personality and imagination to produce something that will stand out for all the right reasons.
It is an opportunity to demonstrate flair and originality, but creativity alone will not be enough. The judges will be looking for food that is beautifully executed, thoughtfully presented and, above all, delicious. After the intensity of the opening challenge, the signature dish could provide the perfect opportunity for some contestants to recover, while others may find that the pressure of the competition has already begun to take its toll.
And with six chefs competing for just five places in the next round, somebody’s MasterChef journey is destined to come to an abrupt end.
Ultimately, the decision rests with Monica and Marcus, who must weigh up the performances across both challenges before deciding which contestants have demonstrated enough potential to continue. For one chef, the dream of becoming MasterChef: The Professionals champion will be over before the competition has properly begun.
With a new-look series, a familiar but formidable judging partnership and an opening skills test designed to expose even the smallest weaknesses, the stakes are high from the outset. The chefs may be experienced professionals, but this is a competition where reputations count for nothing unless they can deliver when it matters most.
The battle to become the next MasterChef: The Professionals champion is officially under way – and if this opening episode is anything to go by, nobody will be allowed to coast their way through.
