Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for its highly anticipated political thriller Trinity, starring Richard Madden and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, with the gripping first-look footage teasing a dangerous conspiracy that could have devastating global consequences.
Fans of Bodyguard have a new thriller to look forward to, as creator Jed Mercurio reunites with Richard Madden for a seven-episode drama packed with political intrigue, military secrets and high-stakes action.
The newly released trailer offers a first glimpse at the tense world of Trinity, which centres on a naval officer who finds herself caught up in a potentially dangerous relationship with the US Secretary of Defense.
Madden, best known for playing David Budd in the hugely popular BBC drama Bodyguard and Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, takes on the role of Secretary of Defense Webb Preston.
Meanwhile, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who has appeared in Loki and Surface, stars as Commander Katherine Decker, a naval officer serving as second-in-command aboard the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine.
The trailer hints at a terrifying situation involving the potential deployment of a nuclear weapon, bringing Katherine into contact with Webb as they attempt to protect her crew and uncover a threat to national security.
However, as Katherine becomes increasingly involved with the charismatic politician, she begins to question his true intentions.
What initially appears to be an unlikely connection soon develops into something much more complicated, as Katherine finds herself torn between her professional duty and her growing personal feelings.
At the heart of the drama is a top-secret programme known as Trinity, which appears to hold the key to a dangerous conspiracy.
According to Netflix, the series follows a naval officer who becomes involved with the Secretary of Defense, only to discover that he could be at the centre of a potentially devastating plot.
Katherine is ultimately forced to question whether Webb is working to prevent a global catastrophe or whether his actions could make him the greatest threat of all.
Speaking about the series, Mercurio described it as a combination of action and political suspense.
He told Netflix Tudum: “high-octane action with a nail-biting conspiracy thriller”.
The Line of Duty creator also revealed that one of his favourite films helped inspire the new project, with the filmmaker drawing on the political thriller genre to create a story set against the backdrop of the Pentagon.
He said: “I love watching thrillers as much as I enjoy making them. One of my all-time favorites is No Way Out. I wanted to create an action thriller set around the Pentagon with a high-stakes conspiracy to challenge a heroic naval officer.”
The nuclear submarine setting also played an important role in shaping the series, with Mercurio explaining why he felt it provided the perfect environment for a tense thriller.
He said: “The ballistic nuclear submarines in the US Navy are the most powerful weapons ever created. They can hide in the ocean depths undetected for months and carry the firepower to wipe out entire countries. There’s no deadlier or more claustrophobic setting for a thriller.”
Alongside Madden and Mbatha-Raw, the impressive cast includes Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret Vandenburg, the powerful CEO and matriarch of the Vandenburg business empire, whose family has established significant political connections.
JD Pardo also stars as Lieutenant Commander Tom Reyes, while Bruce Greenwood plays Special Agent Eric Colby.
The supporting cast is rounded out by Robert Wisdom as Admiral Griff Tatum, Kirk Acevedo as Captain Jock Campbell, Ben Cotton as Special Agent Jake Ryan, James Remar as President Paul Barnard, Jason Ralph as Brooks Vandenburg and Mark O’Brien as Dr Brian York.
The series marks another collaboration between Mercurio and Madden, following their work together on Bodyguard.
Madden’s performance as the troubled protection officer David Budd helped make the BBC thriller a huge success, and expectations will be high as the pair reunite for another story involving political power, dangerous secrets and threats to national security.
Mercurio praised the actor’s involvement, saying: “He’s such a talented and dedicated performer who elevates every script. His performance as Secretary of Defense Webb Preston is sure to keep audiences guessing right up until the end of the season.”
He also spoke warmly about working with Mbatha-Raw, adding: “I’m a longtime fan of Gugu’s work, so I was honored when she took on the role of Commander Katherine Decker,”
Michael Cuesta, whose previous directing credits include Homeland and Daredevil: Born Again, directed the first two episodes and also serves as an executive producer.
Mercurio takes on the roles of creator, writer and showrunner, with executive production from Jimmy Mulville for Hat Trick Mercurio and Wendy Mericle.
Unlike some of Netflix’s recent releases, viewers will not have to wait for weekly instalments, as all seven episodes of Trinity will arrive on the streaming platform on December 1, 2026.
With Richard Madden back working alongside the man behind Bodyguard, and a storyline involving nuclear weapons, political deception and a potentially catastrophic conspiracy, Trinity could be one of Netflix’s biggest thriller releases to watch out for this December.
